What we're about

Q:What is Unity Initiative?

A: UI is an anti-racism/diversity organization that combines the principles of 12-step organizations with those of civil rights movements to create a united fellowship of diverse races, religions, cultures, etc. Meetings and individual participation started Oct 2nd, 2013 (Gandhi's birthday). We are neither a religious nor political group.

Our Vision: Unity Initiative wants to unite people of all diversities into a harmonious community to foster an environment for overcoming prejudice.

Q: Who might be a good candidate for joining UI?

A: Anyone who would like to help nurture social-diversity to heal themselves and our community from racism are welcome. You are someone who values all individuals and sees diversity as adding spice to life. Our anti-racism efforts focus on building a socially diverse community, education, group discussion and participation in anti-racism activities.

Q: Why would I or anyone else join UI?

A: There are two main reasons why someone may want join Unity Initiative; First, you recognize prejudice, bigotry and racism are still maladies that permeate our society to the detriment of present and future generations and you see hope in Unity Initiative's approach for helping resolve these problems and would like to be a part of the solution by becoming a social-diversity activist. Second, like most of us, you may be able to admit you too carry some form of prejudice and would like to overcome your own distortions through the steps, education and fellowship UI offers.

Q: What can members expect out of the group?

A: Unity Initiative events first and foremost, set up an environment where diverse relationships can be developed. We hold discussions concerning our own experiences with race and other forms of diversity. We discuss leaders who have made strides in these areas such as Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King. We may also read or discuss topics in the UI text. Food is usually served at the events.

One of the four pillars of Unity Initiative is to build Beloved Community. In order to do this, we invest our time in connection, intimacy and supportive relationships with others from diverse backgrounds. All are welcome to join us for this UI Fellowship Hike. The only requirement for attendance is a desire to make new friends from diverse backgrounds and to gain awareness of how to interrupt your own internalized racism, or to process how racism affects your life in a community of others who share the goal of contributing to racial justice and equality. This event will be available weekly unless otherwise noted.

We do day hikes during the winter months and night hikes in the summer! Our current [default] hike location to the Marcos De Niza trail off 48th street.

The 4th pillar of the Unity Initiative program to free ourselves from the bondage of bias is taking direct action in communities whose ability to thrive has been impacted by racism or other forms of bias.

Service Saturdays, an outreach of ASU's Project Humanities founded by Dr. Neal Lester, Ph.D., serves as “Humanity 101 in Action,” where intergenerational, multi-professional, and multi-communal individuals, groups, and organizations gather to distribute shoes, clothing, and toiletries to our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

This Saturday morning outreach twice a month--or every other Saturday--has continued to meet a growing need in this local community and as mirrored across the US—the need to extend humanity to individuals most denied that fundamental dignity—respect, kindness, compassion, and empathy.

For the hundreds of volunteers they have had these many years, it is a welcome opportunity as well for deep self-reflection and critical reflection on class, race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, mental health, wellness, suffering, loss, and humanity.

Location Details: (Please read and RSVP so I can provide you the parking lot gate code.)

  1. Arrival-Parking (See arrow #1 on the map image below)

o You will park in the gated parking lots at the SE corner of 12th AVE and Madison.

o The parking lot is just North of the Human Services Campus Administrative Office located at 230 S. 12th Avenue, Phoenix 85007.

o The vehicle-gate and keypad are at the SW corner of the parking lot (See arrow #1 on the map image)

o Enter the 4-digit code followed by the pound key (#)

  1. Walking out parking lot Pedestrian gate - (See arrow #2 on the map image)

o Walk South on 12th Ave.

o To your right, on the West side of 12th Ave, you will see a building "The Brian Garcia Welcome Center".

o To the far right of the vehicle gate, there is a pedestrian gate entrance. If it is open, go through that gate.

o If the pedestrian entrance is not open, look for a security guard in front of the building, let them know you are a volunteer with the Project Humanities program and they should be able to help you get inside the gate.

o If there is no security guard, go to the desk inside the "The Brian Garcia Welcome Center" building and let them know you're a volunteer and need entry.

  1. Volunteer area (See rectangle #4 on the map image)

o Once inside the gate, you should immediately find us in the grassy area of the CASS grounds.

o Volunteers should be wearing either "Project Humanities" shirts or pins.

o There is usually some pre-setup taking place just before the event, then an orientation at the beginning of the event.

o If you don't see an obvious place to jump in and help, or if you have any questions, seek out an experienced volunteer or Dr. Lester.
