Description:
In this session, Wes & Chad will explain the history, concepts, and reasoning behind the need for and creation of the Sparkplug specification. They will cover the technical details of Sparkplug and also how this ultimately lead to the creation of the Eclipse Tahu project. They will also give a brief demonstration of Cirrus Link Solutions Sparkplug powered MQTT modules showing how this technology can and is being used in industry today.

Speakers: Wes Johnson & Chad Kienle
Wes Johnson specializes in embedded device software, cloud computing, and the communication technologies that connect them together (IIot, IoT, M2M, SCADA). He has over 15 years of experience specializing in the industry. After graduating from Portland State University with a B.S. in computer engineering and physics, he began working at Arcom Controls Systems where he was the primary creator of what is now the Eclipse Kura OSGi device framework. At Eurotech, he was Director of Software Engineering and a key contributor to what is now Eclipse Kapua. He is now VP of Software for Cirrus Link solutions where he co-created the Sparkplug specification and is a co-project lead for Eclipse Tahu.

Chad Kienle has over 10 years of experience in building software frameworks and specializes in M2M/IoT solutions using MQTT, Java, OSGi, and other technologies. He is a project lead on Eclipse Tahu as well as a co-creator of the Sparkplug specification. He was a Senior Software Developer at ForgeRock and a lead on the OpenIDM team building identity and provisioning software. Prior to that, at Eurotech, he was an initial creator of what is now Eclipse Kura and the Everyware Device Cloud. At Portland State University, he obtained an MS in Computer Science and a BS in both Computer Engineering and Physics.
