Silvia Avary-Silveira - Juniper Networks and co-founder, Women in Localization
Silvia Avary-Silveira has over 16 years of localization experience working for high-tech companies including Juniper Networks, Symantec, VeriSign and NetApp. She is a native of Brazil and has been living in the U.S. for the past 19 years. Silvia is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish and she has a diverse background, which includes an MBA from San Francisco State University and a Doctor degree in Veterinary Medicine. Silvia is based in the Bay Area and she is the co-founder of Women in Localization.
Michele Carlson - Panel Moderator - SurveyMonkey and Chapter Manager, Women in Localization Silicon Valley
Michele Carlson joined SurveyMonkey two years ago to lead localization. Previously she was the director of localization for Sony Computer Entertainment America where she led the PlayStation localization team to deliver PS4. Before Sony, Michele spent eight years at Yahoo! where she held various positions including the director of localization. She holds a BA in International Relations from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Manuela Furtado – Business Director, Alpha US
Manuela has represented Alpha in the US for the past ten years, promoting its profile and growing its portfolio of customers especially in the Bay Area. She has consulted clients approaching localization for the first time and supported existing ones in growing their global investment. She started her career as a Project and Account Manager at Int’l in San Francisco and later directed the localization team at Uniscape/Trados with the first GMS workflow implementations. She is a parliamentary interpreter by training and studied Languages, Literature and Communication in Milan. Occasionally, she still volunteers translations and creative writing for an art gallery in Milan; she speaks Italian and French.
Yasmin Vanya, Localization Manager, Sony PlayStation
Yasmin Vanya PMP joined SCEA in 2011 as Localization Program Manager and was promoted to Localization Manager in 2014. She is responsible for localization for PlayStation Products (PS4, PS3, PS VITA), websites, packaging and documentation. Prior to that Yasmin worked at Magnicode (an app development start-up) and a long tenure at Xilinx as localization manager and senior software developer. She is a lifelong learner of languages and speaks Burmese, Japanese, Persian, Urdu, some Arabic and basic Mandarin. Yasmin is a strong supporter of democratic changes in her native country Burma (Myanmar) and serves on several non-profit boards.
Leona Zacek, Vendor Manager at Medialocate
Leona has been a MediaLocate team member since 1999 and her talents have made MediaLocate second to none in recruiting top talent. She is a MIIS graduate, speaks Russian and Czech fluently, and is ATA-certified to translate from English to German. She once lived and worked in the Republic of Seychelles, a 155-island country spanning an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. In 1992, Leona participated in the Barcelona Olympics as a member of the Austrian National Handball Team. She also loves golf and rock climbing, and often volunteers at the Monterey SPCA.
