What we're about

I am a Norwegian living in London - I am addicted to nature - and I want to share this enthusiasm with other like minded people who also feel a sense of pure joy and euphoria when spending time outdoors. I am a firm believer in that nature holds the solution to a calm and balanced mind, and that either walking, cycling, running or just simply taking the time to sit still and be present outdoors can relieve stress and worries.

This group is all about mindful walking and hiking, either in the U.K. or abroad, such as for instance Norway - where I will be looking to arrange a few trips already this summer. Perhaps you would like to join me on my 5 day summer hike through Norways wonderful National Park Region (https://www.nasjonalparkriket.no/en/national-parks), which offer more than 9900 square kilometers of national parks. Or maybe you´d like to see the Midnight Sun this July or the Northern Lights in the Lofoten Islands March next year.

Another hiking paradise of mine is the Lake District in Cumbria, England. A place I simply cannot get enough of, and where we are returning to for the 5th time this coming Spring Bank Holiday in May. https://www.meetup.com/Wanderlust-Walks-and/events/258352716/

I hope some of my upcoming trips will trigger your wanderlust, and that you´d like to join me for a few days of guided hiking in our wondrous nature - together with likeminded people who share your passion for being outdoors.

Feel free to send me suggestions for trips you would like to take part in using the email address wanderlustwalks@yahoo.com.

Also, if you would like to see some pictures from my previous hiking and walking adventures then have a look at my _wanderlustwalks Instagram (https://instagram.com/_wanderlustwalks?r=nametag) page for more inspiration.

See you out there :-)

Rolling hills and secluded valleys - Otford Circular via Shoreham

A circular walk approx. 14 km (8.7 miles) with around 4 hours walking time. For the whole excursion including trains, sights and meals we should allow at least 6 hours. The rolling hills and secluded valleys around the Darent valley in Kent is one of my favorite destinations for a day hike close to London. It includes a good mix of woodland and open countryside, with fine views from the steep-sided hills overlooking the Darent valley. This walk's relatively short morning section starts off with a climb to the top of Otford Mount, before it continues through the secluded valley of Magpie Bottom, one of several small nature reserves in the area managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust. A descent through the wooded White Hill brings us to Shoreham, an attractive village where we will find somewhere to sit down and eat our lunch. Remember to bring your own packed lunch and enough water etc. The afternoon section starts with a climb up the other side of the valley into a fine wood, with bluebells in season. The walk then descends via another small nature reserve, Polhill Bank before once again rejoining the stretch along the Darent Valley Path into Otford, another attractive village with many interesting old buildings. At the end of the walk we can choose between a tearoom or a few pubs in Otford where we can stop for an optional drink before taking the train back to London. The walk should finish at about 4.30 pm and include a 30 min lunch stop, however the time may be slightly earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace. *How to get there* We will meet at Otford train station for 11.15am. If you are coming by train I would recommend you take the 10.28 train from London Victoria directly to Otford for 11.16. Trains also run from London Blackfriars, and if you choose to travel from this station you can take the 10.12 train and arrive to Otford for 11.12. Remember to check train times on the day of travel in case there are any disruptions. If you choose to drive there is a car park at Otford station as well. For our return we will aim to take the 16.31 train back to London, depending on whether or not we stop at the pub. A 1 day return ticket currently costs 13.10, but groups of three to nine adults can get 1/3 off Off-Peak ticket price. You can buy your ticket at https://www.thetrainline.com Please note that this walk is subject to a small nominal £5 meetup organisers fee payable on the day. All my walks are also subject to a disclaimer which I kindly ask you to read before signing up: https://www.meetup.com/Wanderlust-Walks-and/pages/27794739/Information_and_Disclaimer/ Don´t hesitate to send me a private message if you have any queries/concerns etc. Hope to see you next weekend for a lovely Sunday walk. Happy Trails! :)

Lake District Walking Weekend - May Bank Holiday

Kendal Hostel

£190.00

Come join us when we are going back to the Lakes for 3 days of walking this late May bank holiday, and meet likeminded people that share your passion for nature. :) The Lake District is a stunning place to go hiking this time of year, when the springtime landscape is dotted with daffodils and swathes of bluebells. May is also historically one of the driest months in Cumbria, and falls nicely between the Easter rush and the summer crowds. ************************************* I am exited to let you know that I have managed to secure a maximum of 20 beds at Kendal Hostel, a quirky and friendly family run hostel in the middle of Kendal town centre, the 3rd biggest market town in Cumbria. The price includes: 🔹3 nights hostel accommodation in shared occupancy rooms (separate female / male) 🔹3 days of guided hiking together with myself and Ben, an experienced fell walker who lives and works in the Lakes and who knows the area very well 🔹Warm and light dinner upon arrival on Friday evening 🔹Breakfast and self-packed lunch Saturday, Sunday and Monday 🔹Free pool table at the hostel if you fancy a game or five 🔹Tea and coffee available all day The price does not include: Dinner on Saturday and Sunday night - we will be going out to eat in Kendal town centre. Transport expenses - please take into consideration that you will need to be included in a car lift-share when we are in the Lake District as we will be driving to the beginning of our hikes on Saturday and Sunday which takes about 30-45 min. We have a few spare seats in our car for those of you arriving by train/bus. Please email me if you need help with transportation :) ************************************** *The Itinerary* Have a look at the below link to view our agenda for the weekend (you are, of course, entirely free to make your own plans for the day too): https://www.meetup.com/Wanderlust-Walks-and/pages/28287173/The_Itinerary_-_Lake_District_24-27_May_2019/?success=pages_add *The Hikes* No previous hiking experience is needed as long as you feel comfortable about walking in rugged terrain, both uphill and downhill. We will be keeping a pace which allows for everyone to walk together as a group. The hikes will be between 8-12 miles (13-20km) on the Saturday and Sunday, with a shorter one on Monday which leaves us with plenty of time to travel back to London. *The Kit List* Have a look at the kit list so that you are prepared to tackle whatever it is mother nature might decide to throw at us: https://www.meetup.com/Wanderlust-Walks-and/pages/27792083/The_Kit_List/ *The important bit* By signing up to this trip you agree to the following disclaimer and important information: https://www.meetup.com/Wanderlust-Walks-and/pages/27794739/Information_and_Disclaimer/ Cost £190 - To join me on this lovely Lakeland spring trip please RSVP Yes and make payment as per the below using internet banking. The account details are: Lloyds Bank Account name: MONICA NICHOLLS Sort Code:[masked] Account Number:[masked] Please note that only payment can secure your bed. NORWAY - A wintery trip to the Lofoten Islands

Hemmingodden Lofoten Fishing Lodge

- N O R W A Y & L O F O T E N - Northern lights, rugged mountains, deep fjords. Norway is all that and more. Wanderlust Walks is finally arranging the very first wintery trip to Norway in March 2020 (postponed from 2019) so save the date and come join me for when I travel back home to the land of the Vikings to chase the Northern Lights, kayak the frozen islands of Lofoten, visit the Viking Museum, road trip Lofoten from east to west, go fishing with the locals and much more. Every outing in this region is framed by rugged mountain tops that rise straight from the sea. ************************* I am exited to let you know that I have managed to secure 15 beds at Hemmingodden Lofoten Fishing Lodge: (https://www.hemmingodden.no/kokkbua/) where we will be staying in a real fisherman´s cabin (´rorbu´) right down by the pier, overlooking the majestic Lofoten mountains. Hemmingodden is located in Ballstad, the central part of Lofoten, which makes it easy to do day-trips to the west part of Lofoten on one day, and east on another. The fisherman´s lodges have fully equipped kitchens so that we can cook our own food if we wish to do so. The price includes: 🔹4 nights accommodation in a "rorbu", a real fisherman's cabin 🔹Transport to and from the airport + all transport around on the island 🔹Northern Lights Chase in the evenings 🔹Entrance to the Viking Museum 🔹Daytime sightseeing, visiting the charming villages of Henningsvær, Kabelvåg, Svolvær, Reine and Å (the southernmost point on mainland Lofoten) 🔹Hike and hot chocolate on the beautiful Haukland Beach 🔹Kayak the frozen Lofoten islands (optional) 🔹Go fishing with the locals on a traditional fisherman´s boat. If we´re lucky we get to see the Northern Lights reflected in the sea this evening! On this trip we will also get to know Lofoten’s colourful fishing villages with the characteristic “rorbuer” (fishermen’s cabins, of which we will be staying in one), local handicrafts, food, and rich history that dates back to the Vikings. The price does not include flights (around £200) and meals, but we will buy food at the local grocery store and prepare at the cabin most days so the food expenses shouldn´t be too high. We will be taking a morning flight (around 9am) from London to Oslo, where we will change flights. Arrival at Evenes should be for around 3pm. Once in Evenes we´ll pick up the rental car(s) and start our 3 hours scenic drive through Lofoten and to our accommodation in Ballstad. The flight back to London will depart from Evenes around 3pm, arriving in London for 7-8 pm on Monday 16th March. The program and price for the weekend is not yet set in stone as I will need to have a rough estimate over how many people who would be interested in joining me before I can go ahead with any bookings. Therefore, may I please ask that you RSVP ´Yes´ if you do find this trip interesting and would like to join. This will enable me to plan a bit more in detail. It is no secret that Norway is a relatively expensive country, and so I am trying my best to keep the cost for this trip as low as I can. :) ************************* We are, of course, hoping to see the Northern Lights on this trip (in additon to many other things!), but please keep in mind that the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon which can be skittich and elusive, meaning there are no guarantee of seeing it. To see the Northern Lights, the sky needs to be dark and clear of any clouds, and they most commonly appear between 17:00 and 02:00. As Lofoten is situated just beneath the auroral oval, a belt of light that encircles the geomagnetic poles, it provides some of the best chances of seeing this spectacular, flickering light dancing over the night sky. Feel free to sign up by rsvp YES to show your interest and I shall come back to those of you who do so that we can finalise the agenda closer to the time. Please email [masked] if you have questions. Happy Trails! :) Monica
