What we're about

WIP Comics (or Work in Progress Comics, to give it its full name) is a group made to help aspiring artists, writers and comic creators move their ideas and projects forward. We have two monthly meetups — one to discuss what we’re all currently working on, give and receive feedback and constructive criticism on our work and bounce ideas off each other for new projects, and one focused more on the more practical elements of creating comics, from character design to world building.

All skill and experience levels are welcome, from complete beginners to established creators, and our intention is to support each other and create an environment where we can offer and ask for advice without judgement. Everyone has a different style, and there is no single ‘correct’ way to draw, write or tell a story, so we actively encourage a variety of different approaches and people coming from different backgrounds. Whether you want to make a sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, comedy, slice-of-life, autobiographical or any other kind of comic then we’d love to see it and help you get to a point where you’re happy with it.

Beyond the meetups we also have a podcast (https://anchor.fm/wipcomics) where I chat to various comic creators about their work every fortnight, and a Slack group where all the members are invited to continue the conversation online.

The group was established by Michal Ingram back in July 2011, and was originally known as the 'Graphic Novels and Comics, Critique and Collaboration Meetup'. It’s gone through various iterations and different organisers, but all with the core idea of helping each other make work we’re proud of. Over the years many people have forged creative partnerships and workshopped ideas with the group that have gone on to become fully realised projects.

We’re a very friendly, laid-back and welcoming group, and apart from advice and feedback then our Meetups are also a great way to meet like-minded people and just hang out to talk about comics.

WIP Monthly Meetup

Online event

Our regular monthly meetup – now online for the foreseeable future!

Each month we will discuss any comics anyone has been working on lately, give each other feedback, catch up on any group projects, and chat through any other questions anyone has. Sometimes we might also do some drawing exercises and have special themes or agendas depending on what people are interested in.

New members are always welcome, and don't worry if you're a total beginner and have nothing to show at this stage – come along and just hang out and see what other people have been working on.

The link and password to join the Zoom call will be shared the morning of the event to everyone who RSVPs. Be sure to select 'Going' to get it sent over to you.

WIP Thought Bubble Drop Off

Royal Festival Hall

WIP will have a group table at this year's Thought Bubble festival in Harrogate, and this is your chance to hand over your comics so we can have them on sale there.

If you want to drop off your work to us then come along to the Royal Festival Hall between 2pm – 3.30pm on Sunday 7th to hand them over. Please bring no more than 10 comics overall (either 10 copies of a single comic, 5 copies of two comics, etc.), as we can only carry so much. If you can't make this date but want to have your work on sale please get in touch with Joe via message or email and we can arrange posting them over instead.

Please note, this meetup will be focused purely on handing over the comics you want on our group table at Thought Bubble, and won't be the usual format where we all chat about our work – but there is an online meetup on the 6th where we can do that.

We will let you know the exact location of where we are on the day via this event page, so if you want to know where to find us make sure to RSVP.

WIP Creating Comics Online - Introduction to Digital Art and Comics Creation

Creating Comics is a monthly meetup, where we study the craft of drawn narratives with the goal of helping people create their own comics.

This time, we'll look at creating art and comics digitally, exploring different tools we can use for the creative process. We can leverage them in order to create our comics from beginning to end, but also to enhance work that we have created on traditional media. And we can have a mix of both. It’s all up to the artist’s hand!

We will go through a few ways in which you can incorporate digital practices into our art and hopefully will get a chance to explore one of them for a bit.

Please do feel free to come along even if you already work digitally. There will be something for everyone and it would be very helpful to have your contribution to the discussion. :)

This event will be developed and lead by Claudia Matosa.

See you there!
