Sugar Kings Trio
• What we'll do From the salons of pre-revolution Havana, where the sweet smell of cigars lingered and the aged rum flowed, the Sugar Kings Trio present their son montuno, guaracha and cha cha cha, all with a good few rays of Cuban sunshine. Featuring baby bass, Cuban tres guitar, percussion and vocal harmonies the band consists of three music greats, Flavio Correa, Elpidio Caicedo and Daniel Carnago. Happy New Year folks! Join us for this the first in the new Tuned In London series! Cuban percussionist and singer, Flavio Correa, grew up in Centro Havana surrounded by musical giants such as Chucho Valdez. Inspired by the revival of traditional Cuban music through the amazing “Buena Vista Social Club”, he formed his band, “The Sugar Kings”, naming them after the popular Havana Baseball team of the pre-revolution days. Flavio has performed at Ronnie Scotts, Royal Albert Hall, National Theatre and currently tours with international violinist, Omar Puente. He has composed music for and appeared in the BBC production of ‘The Hour’ starring Dominic West and Ben Wishaw as well as ITV’s ‘Auf Weidersehen, Pet’. Multi-instrumentalist and singer, Elpidio Caicedo, is one of the top Salsa players in the UK and performs with such greats as Omar Puente and Roberto Pla. Born in Buena Ventura near Cali (the Colombian capital of salsa), Elpidio is the musical director of choice for visiting Colombian musical stars. Classically trained Tres player and singer, Daniel Carnago, hails from Santiago de Cuba, the Island’s cultural capital of the east. He was a longstanding member of Cuba’s formidable ‘Septeto Contemporario’ before settling in the UK, where he is currently touring with Asere. What we're about

Public Group

Please note that this group has No Show policy. If you fail to turn to 2 events you'll be banned from the group.

"The truest expression of a people is in its dances and in its music"

From traditional ethnic music to foreign language pop music, the phrase "World Music" covers a lot of ground. From Reggae to Ragas, Celtic to Klezmer, Salsa to Paris Cafe, world music pretty much encompasses everything that doesn't fit comfortably into an typical 'Top 40' pop chart.

All in all, world music is considered just plain music to the vast majority of people in the world. Music is universal, and to discover the music of a culture is to discover the culture as a whole.
