"The truest expression of a people is in its dances and in its music"
From traditional ethnic music to foreign language pop music, the phrase "World Music" covers a lot of ground. From Reggae to Ragas, Celtic to Klezmer, Salsa to Paris Cafe, world music pretty much encompasses everything that doesn't fit comfortably into an typical 'Top 40' pop chart.
All in all, world music is considered just plain music to the vast majority of people in the world. Music is universal, and to discover the music of a culture is to discover the culture as a whole.

Errol Linton: Brixton Blues celebrating Tuned In London's 15th anniversary
St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe, Saint Marychurch St, London SE16 4HZ, UK, London, GBFrom a packed Glastonbury 2022 Acoustic Stage slot to a feature in BBC Two’s Arena documentary Two Generations of the Blues (Blues South of the River), Errol Linton is the real deal. He won the UK Blues Challenge in 2023, and he’s the harmonica you hear tearing through Joe Bonamassa’s Grammy nominated album, Abbey Road cut “Lookout Man!” from Royal Tea. More recently, he stepped into the national spotlight again with a live session on Cerys Matthews’ BBC Radio 2 Blues Show this year.
Expect Chicago Blues shot through with reggae swing, soulful harp, and a band that absolutely smokes. As well as siding for Joe Bonamassa, Errol has played with Henry Gray, Tony Allen and Abram Wilson. We will be in festive spirits, celebrating 15 years since our first gigs in Rotherhithe that became the Tuned In London programme. Errol was one of the very first, and the first time he brought us his full band we were marking our fifth anniversary.
Tickets are available from the Tuned In London website.

Very special guests: Juliet Stevenson with Asmaa Azaizeh, Alice Russell, Rasha Nahas, Ruba Shamshoum, Jacqui Dankworth, Filament Choir led by Osnat Schmool, Singing Resistance London and a band led by Charlie Wood. This isn't just a gig. Every ticket sold helps to restart a life-saving breast cancer screening programme at Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City - a hospital that has stayed open through the war despite being hit 8 times, and that Amos Trust has supported for over 30 years. Women in Gaza are three times more likely to die from breast cancer than women in the UK. This is In Her Hands: Amos Trust's campaign standing with them, a night where music does something real. Come for songs from one of the great British songwriters. Stay for solidarity that means something.
Tickets cost £47, all for a good cause. Please book via the Union Chapel website.
I recently saw Tanita perform at the Royal Festival Hall. It was a fantastic gig with brilliant musicians and I think glancing at the list of special guests this will be a treat of an evening.
Doors open at 6.30pm or earlier if you book to eat in the bar beforehand, although at the time of posting this, the booking form is not available, so perhaps it's sold out?? I'm not sure.
I will set up a WhatsUp group so that we can message each other on the night. I have yet to see this new feature of Meetup actually in use, but hopefully it will work!

Three Big Bands Celebrate Bill Ashton's Life & Music
Union Chapel, 19b Compton Terrace, London N1 2UN, UK, London, GBMore Jazz than World Music for this one: Ronnie Scott's goes to Union Chapel - Three extraordinary big bands. One very special night.
On what would have been his 90th birthday, Union Chapel hosts a remarkable celebration of the life, music and legacy of Bill Ashton OBE – founder of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and one of the most influential figures in British jazz.
For more than four decades, Bill created opportunities for young musicians to learn their craft where it mattered: in a band, on a stage and alongside exceptional players. Through NYJO, generations of musicians were given the chance to rehearse, perform, tour, write, arrange and discover what kind of musicians they might become.
The roll call of those who passed through the orchestra is extraordinary. Amy Winehouse sang with NYJO as a teenager, while generations of leading British jazz musicians, composers, arrangers, session players and musical directors learned their craft under Bill’s watch. His influence can still be heard across British jazz, the West End, recording studios, orchestras and stages throughout the world.
So perhaps the most fitting way to celebrate Bill is with an enormous amount of music including many of his own charts.
For this unique concert hosted by Bill’s son Miles Ashton, three of Britain’s great big bands appear together on the same bill: the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the organisation Bill created in 1965; the internationally renowned BBC Big Band; and, closing the evening, the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra under the baton of Pete Long.
Across three hours of live music, they will celebrate not simply Bill’s life, but the musical world he helped to create – bringing together different generations of players, including musicians whose own careers bear the imprint of the opportunities, encouragement and sometimes formidable standards he provided.
The show will feature the premiere of Paul Hart’s setting of a poem by the Irish poet William Allingham. A NYJO alumnus, Hart (1954–2022) was a prolific composer and musician. The evening concludes with a particularly poignant performance of another of his works, Remembrance, with acclaimed flautist Gareth Lockrane joining the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra as a special guest.
Bill Ashton devoted much of his life to giving musicians a place to play. On his 90th birthday, many of them come together to play for him. This is a unique performance that turns Union Chapel into Ronnie Scott's just for one night. With 3 big bands and the in-house Union Chapel band playing beforehand in the bar, suddenly it makes the relatively high ticket price seem very reasonable!
Tickets are £40 (or £25 for students) and are available here. Please sign up to this only after you have your ticket.
Seating is unreserved. You can bagsy a seat then go up to the bar. Or we could meet outside and then reserve seats together when we go in... The Chapel is one of London's best live music venues. There'll actually be music in the bar upstairs from 5pm, so with three big bands AND and house band, we'll be getting our money's worth... Profits will be going to these organisations: Ronnie Scott's Charitable Foundation, National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Help Musicians.
