What we're about

Zalando Tech Hub in Dortmund was founded in 2012 as the first satellite office outside of Berlin. Zalando SE grew from a small team of few developers and product managers working on Campaign and Media Planning, Market Analysis and Payments solutions in scope of responsibilities over the years. Zalando Payments GmbH was officially founded in 2016 and opened its Dortmund office as part of the Dortmund Tech Hub in the same year.
Zalando SE & Zalando Payments GmbH continuously add new areas of competency, with teams now focused on the tech challenges connected to business-critical topics.

📜 About the Event

Zalando Dortmund Tech Hub is celebrating its 10th anniversary and we would like to invite you to the office to share Cyber Week insights, get to know us & have some fun!

Cyber Week is the busiest sales event of the year for most local and online retailers, and it's no different for Zalando. Consumers are on a hunt for a bargain. Merchants on the platform run campaigns and dynamically tweak prices in order to steer towards target metrics. All of this results in customer journeys and traffic patterns that are vastly different from those throughout the rest of the year. At peak times, Zalando systems easily receive a tenfold of the load of an average day or even more.

Thus, engineering applications find themselves in strenuous situations and require diligent craftsmanship. At the same time, both the cost and the likelihood of failure are amplified.

We will talk about how we address these challenges at Zalando – from a technical perspective, but also from an organisational one – and we'll share with you what we have learned over the years. We’ll share how we shape our architecture and engineer for resilience, how we find out whether we got it right (load tests) and what we do if we got it wrong (incident management and learning culture). And as our biggest challenge, we’ll look at how we do all of the above inside the complex construct that is the Zalando platform; composed of 1,500 applications and operated by 200 teams.
