About us
Independent theatre a/perture cinema brings the most wonderful (and whimsical/weird/wild) films to downtown Winston-Salem, including lots of gems that you might otherwise never see. Let this club give you an excuse to come out once a month and explore what the silver screen has to offer.
We'll see one of the movies that's playing on the second Thursday of every month and—if you have the time and interest!—head to the coffee shop next door to discuss (to be honest, this part is the most fun!). To allow everyone to attend (and responsibly go to work on Friday) we'll always pick something that screens around 6pm.
Event dates will be shared well in advance,* while final film selection and showtimes will be posted about one week prior to the event—we can't choose a film until after a/perture posts what's screening, after all!
*Dates are sometimes shifted in the summer when travel and vacation is more common.

June Movie Meetup (6/11) - Bull Durham @ 6pm
a/perture cinema, 311 west fourth st., Winston-Salem, NC, USSometimes it's nice to just have a little fun at the theater—and summer is usually the time when we watch some slightly less Oscars-ready fare*. Bull Durham pairs Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner for laughs, love, and a whole lotta baseball featuring North Carolina's very own Durham Bulls.
Potential questions to discuss: Why are the romantic comedies of the 80s just better (Bull Durham is 97% fresh on RT)? Were better actors and actresses in these roles? Were the stories still fresh and original? How accurate do we think this picture is when it comes to the life of minor league athletes? Are baseball movies the best category of sports movie? Can we recognize any of the locations they shot at?- Meeting Up & Talking After: Once you have your ticket, take the hallway to the right off the main entrance (past the men's restrooms/on the way to the lower-level theaters) to the members "ta/ke out" section—there are some chairs and a small area where we usually say hello to one another before heading into the movie (especially if it's your first time!). Someone will be there from ~15 minutes before the film until just before showtime. If you arrive late, just head into the film and you can join us after—we go next door to the Washington Perk coffee shop to discuss.
- Please update your RSVP if you can't make it—this helps with a few things, including how many people we're keeping an eye out for—and sometimes lets people use your ticket if you can't!
- Recommended: purchasing your ticket online ahead of time; this lets a/perture know if more people than expected are coming, AND keeps you from waiting in line if you don't want concessions.
- And remember: You do NOT need to be a serious cinephile to join our group—but we hope you're open to talking about your ideas anyway, and learning from the insights of others!
- Parking Info from a/perture (there's a parking garage right behind the theatre—and a/perture provides a $4 coupon for your stay!).
Film Details from a/perture:
Director: Ron Shelton Run Time: 108 min. Release Year: 1988
Starring: Kevin Costner, Robert Wuhl, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Trey Wilson
First-time director and writer Ron Shelton was Oscar-nominated for this behind-the-scenes look at minor league baseball, and the characters who make up the team and its supporters. Filmed all across North Carolina, the film is a surprisingly romantic take on America’s pastime with magnetic performances from stars Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins.
Veteran catcher Crash Davis is brought to the minor league Durham Bulls to help their up and coming pitching prospect, “Nuke” Laloosh. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start and is further complicated when baseball groupie Annie Savoy sets her sights on the two men.
“… a comic delight and maybe a miracle. It’s the first baseball movie that gets things right without trying: there isn’t a line in it that feels reverent or fake-tough or hurriedly explanatory, or that tries to fill in the uninitiated about what’s going on out there.” ~ Roger Angell, New Yorker*especially when all of the other films beginning about our start time will only leave us with 20 minutes or so of discussion afterwards!
