Payment is in advance for this tour. Once you have booked your place on Meet Up, Steve will be in touch about paying the walk fee to secure your place.

A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.

In the land where the River Avon is joined by the River Frome there are delightful wooded valleys to walk through and a great deal of history to be found.

Our six mile walk starts in the Wiltshire village of Westwood outside Bradford-on-Avon where will admire our first fine manor house as well as a beautiful perpendicular Gothic church.

We descend through pastureland to Farleigh Hungerford Castle, one of the lesser known Late Medieval strongholds.

We walk through water meadows along the River Frome to discover Iford Manor in all its Italianate splendour.

Onward to the Cotswold stone village of Freshford where we will pause to refresh ourselves at the sixteenth century village inn.

Our return route takes us along the River Avon for a look at Avoncliff aqueduct on the Kennet and Avon canal. And then there is the hill! It’s not long, but it is steep.

As is our custom a full set of written notes will be emailed out after the walk to help you hold on to what you have picked up from our wander through the delightful valleys of the Avon and Frome.
