Bradford on Avon: Pioneering Rubber Town

We have visited Bradford on Avon on several occasions for walks along the River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Today's tour is different.

We are going to focus on the industrial heritage of the town and particulalry on the pioneering role BoA played in the development of the rubber industry in the twentieth century.

This is the weekend of the Iron Duke Festival, celebrating ten years since the magnificent rubber pressing machine returned to the town and went on display in the street.

Our industrial heritage tour will also cover the medieval wool industry, the arrival and importance of the canal and railway and the role of the stone quarrying industry in creating the honey coloured loveliness that is Bradford on Avon today.

As is our custom a full set of written notes will be emailed out after the walk to help you hold on to what you have picked up from our exploration of this historic industrial town.

A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
