A11yNYC: Automatic Captions: Our Experiments and Best Practices

Automated captions are cool but often inaccurate. We decided to design a series of experiments to compare specific short scripts of spoken audio. We used a variety of speakers for each test case.

Our presentation will share real data and lessons learned from a variety of artificial intelligence (AI) platforms to determine which one provides the most accurate results. We will also highlight the latest tools available from a variety of AI technologies working in this space.

Attendees will learn about:

• Test cases for captioning
• Different captioning AIs used in testing
• SRT vs. VTT caption files
• Exporting captions
• The quality of the displayed captions

And there will be time for your questions.

Presenter bios
Thomas Logan has spent the past 20 years assisting organizations to create technology solutions that work for people with disabilities. Over his career, Thomas has delivered projects for numerous federal, state, and local government agencies as well as private sector organizations from startups to Fortune 500s.

He is the owner of Equal Entry, whose mission is: “contributing to a more accessible world.” He is also the organizer of Accessibility Virtual Reality and co-organizer of Accessibility New York. Both are monthly Meetups for people interested in topics related to accessibility and people with disabilities. Thomas lives in Tokyo, Japan.

Meryl Evans, CPACC, is a TEDx and professional speaker, trainer, author, and accessibility marketing consultant who was born deaf. She is a highly regarded speaker on diversity, equity, and inclusion who focuses on people with disabilities and accessibility. She has spoken at many events including TEDx.

She works with Thomas at Equal Entry as an accessibility consultant. Meryl is the co-organizer of A11yNYC and A11yVR Meetups.
