Improving Mobility by Assisting Cognition: A Case Study

Details

To date, existing navigational aids (mobile apps, GPS) remain weakly adapted to the cognitive needs of human beings. This is especially true for people with cognitive disabilities, who face specific difficulties when it comes to finding one’s way in the city. Romain Delgrange will present a new study assessing the effectiveness and usability of a prototypal aid designed to meet the needs of people with cognitive disabilities.

In this study, 90 participants without disabilities performed spatial tasks in the virtual environment of Grand Theft Auto V. Half of the participants performed the experiment in a dual-task condition inducing a cognitive overload in order to simulate a disability. The interests of this methodology as well as the results obtained regarding the prototypal aid will be discussed.

Mozilla Hubs holds weekly office hours that can be used to practice and gain an understanding of how to interact in Mozilla Hubs.

We will have captions provided by Mirabai Knight of White Coat Captioning and have the real time text translation displayed in Hubs.
We will have video streaming of the event to YouTube via a partnership with the Internet Society Accessibility SIG (a11ySIG).

If you are unable to join via Hubs, we encourage you to watch the stream on YouTube and ask questions. As we begin meeting regularly each month we will capture feedback on ways we can be more accessible and inclusive in virtual reality and start incorporating them into a set of Best Practices.
