Photographing the Wolf Moon - San Francisco location

This month we will have another chance to photograph the rising full moon with Coit Tower. I’ve scouted a new location that allows us to see the moon soon after it rises. (Last month our location was too low to see the moon right away.)
You will learn how to balance your moon exposure with the rest of your composition and learn some secrets on how to get a big moon. I will also share my secrets on how to calculate the best locations and prepare for your own future full moon shoots. Moonrise will be at 4:55pm and sunset will be at 5:07pm, practically ideal conditions for a balanced exposure.
Bring your camera, a long lens and a tripod. A cable release or wireless remote is helpful. If you want to practice balancing ambient with flash while we wait for the moon to rise, bring your strobe, a light modifier or reflector and a plan for how to trigger your flash.
We will be near North Beach, so night time photography can be a natural extension of this meetup for those who want to linger.
Side Note: Native Americans gave names to each month’s moon. They kept track of the passage of time by observing the waxing and waning of the moon. Names were based mostly on natural occurences. Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January’s full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule.
