We commence our hike in Great Missenden, a truly swizzfigglingly flushbunkingly gloriumptious village, which was home to Roald Dahl and where he wrote many of his whizzpopping books. We will follow the footsteps of the BFG and visit the Roald Dahl memorial in the local church before heading out of the village and into the Chilterns Countryside.We'll follow the trail and head up Balcombe Hill, passing through National Trust land and a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest', enjoying fantastic views from the Coombe Hill monument overlooking the Chilterns and the Prime Ministers Country home - Chequers.
We'll continue our walk through the woods and countryside heading back to Great Missenden. There is a Christmas market planned within Missenden Abbey (note there is a small entrance fee £4) where depending on time we'll aim to visit, then head to a local pub for refreshments before heading home.

Let's "unleash hell" into the new year by enjoying a hike to woods where the dramatic opening scene to Gladiator was filmed! We commence our hike from Farnham train station following the River Wey - passing Mother Ludlam's cave, the source of several local legends, before arriving at the ruins of Waverley Abbey.From there we continue into the woods ascending to the scenic lookout point on Crooksbury Hill. We follow the trail meandering through the woods to the beautiful National Trust Site, Frensham Little Pond.
We continue our hike to Alice Holt Forest, Bourne Wood the film set for numerous movies including the opening scene to Gladiator as well as many other films... Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, Warhorse.....
After 'battling' our way through the woods, we'll head back to Farnham where we have a couple of choices of cosy pubs for a drink before heading home.

Join us for this classic walk in the South Downs National Park. This is one of the most magnificent and justifiably well-known 13-mile walk along the South Downs way. This is the classic version of the Seven Sisters starting from Seaford Station to Eastbourne along the white chalk cliffs via Cuckmere Haven, Birling Gap and Beachy Head.
We will follow the sea cliffs to Cuckmere Haven taking in the classic view of the Seven Sisters then continuing on before ascending the first the seven sisters before descending the seventh to reach Birling Gap where we will stop to look at the informative exhibition on view in the visitors centre and a take a rest, break and picnic lunch on the grass slopes looking down on Birling Gap.
Leaving Birling Gap we continue along the cliffs past Belle Tout Lighthouse and then Beachy Head before descending down to Eastbourne where we will take a rest and have some refreshments. Direct trains to London, Hastings, Lewes and Brighton
LEVEL - Moderate to Energetic in parts. Distance 20km and 550 metres ascent. We will allow approximately 6 hours for walking, depending upon the speed of the group and excluding any breaks.
TRAVEL LOGISTICS:
Meetup Point:
London Victoria Station, in front of the ticket machines where the Benches are at 8:00 to get the 8:24 train altogether.We should complete the walk in Eastbourne town centre at about 17:00 although it is impossible to state an exact time as this depends on the weather and pace of the group and other unknown factors.
In Eastbourne we can either explore, visit a pub or decide to return to London straight away. Those who decide to join the hike, please consider yourself committed for the entire day.
THINGS TO BRING
- Waterproof walking boots.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers if you have them, after all this is England and it’s known to rain sometimes.
- Suitable trousers or shorts, not jeans
- 2 litres of water, snacks and a packed lunch.

AAA has hired three Norfolk Cruisers for this weekend. Each one can accommodate up to ten people, subject to the berths selected. Boats are equipped with two bathrooms, each with a shower, heating, kitchen, oven etc. and a sliding roof to enjoy the open air and sights. There are also showers at the marinas we visit.FOOD

AAA has hosted Hiking Weekend events for over a decade. As a result, we have a wealth of experience, ensuring you will enjoy some great hikes and some great food.This event has members RSVPing from our other AAA Regional Groups as well, so attendance is likely to appear greater than it first appears on this page!

You will have a choice of hikes, ranging from Moderate to Energetic. When we have three or more leaders, we also offer Challenging routes. AAA leaders have extensive navigational and hike-leading experience and are trained in wilderness first aid.You can choose between shorter hikes of around 15 km and longer, more demanding hikes of 25 km +. We will take the weather into account and offer routes on the day.
ITINERARY
The event starts at the accommodation at 16:00 and finishes after the half-day hike on Monday around 1 p.m.

We have reserved Twin Share and a few Single Rooms at the Shap Hotel close to the M6 and within easy access to many of the great peaks on the Eastern side of the Lake District. The Hotel is located in the countryside, and it's not uncommon to see Red Squirrels and deer.All rooms are well-appointed, and Free WiFi is available throughout the entire Hotel.

FOOD
The Hotel provides meals. Many meals are a buffet. If you have any dietary requirements, please let us know in advance so we can advise the Hotel. Packed lunches are not included, and most rooms do not have a fridge. However, you can pre-order a packed lunch with the Hotel for a small charge if you choose.TRANSPORT
Driving is the best option to reach the Hotel. To request or offer a lift, please check out this Event Message Board.COST
