ACA Core Skills 03: Rappelling / Ascending - Ogden Area

This course is part 3 in a 6 part course to instruct participants who are new to canyoneering. We encourage continued participation and dedication by attending ALL SIX CLASSES.

People who attended the previous class will be given preference in the waitlist.

This is a FREE workshop, open to all ACA-Canyoneering Meetup and Facebook members. Participation in this workshop is continually at the discretion of the instructor(s). It is up to each participant to fairly and accurately assess their existing skills to determine whether the material to be learned and practiced is appropriate for their abilities. Students who sign up and then don't show for the course may be moved to the waitlist or removed from participating in future sessions.

OBJECTIVE: Provide students with the basic personal on rope skills and techniques needed to descend easy canyons as team members with competent leaders and mentors. If you are seeking more complete training, please consider participating in a course offered by an ACA Certified Guide Service.

Topics Covered:

  • Review from Lesson 02
  • Flash Floods / Watersheds
  • Hands Free Backup (using a VT or third hand)
  • Locking off on Rappel
  • Ascending Introduction
  • Self Rescue, Stuck Gear
  • Static standard Courtesy Rigging

REQUIRED ITEMS TO BRING:

  • Climbing Helmet
  • Harness (good condition and manufacture date not more than 5yrs old)
  • Rappel Device (ATS, Pirana, CRITR2, SQWUREL) or similar device preferred.

RECOMMENDED ITEMS TO BRING:

  • Canyoneering Backpack
  • 3-4 Locking Screw-Gate Carabiners (HMS, pear-shape preferred)
  • Rappelling Gloves
  • 20 feet 1'' Tubular Webbing
  • 10 feet 6mm or 7mm Cord for Knot Practice
  • 1-Quick link
  • Purcell Prusik
  • Assorted Lengths Slings
  • 1 to 2 Ascending Devices : MicroTraxion (preferred), Basic, Croll, Ropeman, Tibloc, ect.
  • VT Prusik

IMPORTANT INFORMATION. PLEASE READ.

  • Participant Minimum Age Requirement: 18 Years

• We will be practicing at height! Skills will be practiced with weighted ropes.

• We will be outside; dress appropriately for anticipated weather - closed toe shoes, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, windbreaker/jacket, and whatever else you may need to stay comfortable for the day.

• Bring snacks, water, etc. Bring a portable chair/cushion to sit on. Come prepared to take notes (pen, notebook, camera).

• This event will be cancelled if there is inclement weather.

• Do not come to this practice session if you do not want to be responsible for your own safety and well being. You are solely responsible for your own safety and well-being.
