Designs for the web typically start as wireframes, become Photoshop mockups, and are given to engineers to code and ship. What happens when designers skip the second step, and are responsible for the third? When designers build and ship products, how does it change our concept of design, designers, and a design team within an organizational?

Joel is currently a product designer at Quora. Previously, he worked at GoodGuide as a software engineer, and studied HCI in Stanford's Symbolic System program.
