An Introduction to Smartphone Forensics

Smartphones contain a wealth of information about users and are frequently used as evidence sources in civil and criminal legal proceedings. In this talk, Dan O’Day from KPMG will explain what types of data are available on Google Android and Apple iOS devices and discuss tools, strategies, and challenges associated with preserving this data. Mobile device security issues associated with “rooting” or “jailbreaking” devices will also be discussed as well as their impact on the preservation of device data. Locard’s exchange principle will be discussed in the context of smartphone data that are frequently stored within vehicle infotainment and telematics systems.

Dan O’Day is a Senior Associate in KPMG LLP’s Cyber Security Services practice, where he provides Cyber Response consulting services to clients in the areas of digital forensics (computers, mobile devices, and vehicles), incident response, and more. Dan was formerly an intelligence analyst and forensic examiner in federal law enforcement (CSI) and routinely presented trial and deposition testimony related to smartphones in criminal cases. He has also taught digital forensics and technology courses in both corporate and academic settings. Dan enjoys spending time with family, reading, coding, and good conversation over beer/coffee and/or cigars.
