About us
Membership in the Orange County Professional Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is open to all interested parties including current ACM members and non-members. There is no requirement to join the ACM to be a local chapter member.
The OC ACM Chapter hosts bi-monthly presentations of interest to members of the Information and Computer Sciences communities. Recording of our meetings are available on our YouTube channel.

Quantum 2.0 harnesses superposition, entanglement, teleportation and coherence in large-scale systems—such as quantum computers, networks and sensors—that move beyond the single-system capabilities of Quantum 1.0, which had the transistor as its basis. The Second Quantum Revolution is using these principles to drive innovations in the four major areas of: quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices.Quantum computing is poised to solve certain complex problems exponentially faster than classical computers, while quantum cryptography offers unparalleled security for data transmission and storage. Advancements in quantum sensing and metrology are enabling ultra-precise measurements, crucial for fields such as healthcare, defence, and navigation. Progress in quantum materials and devices will drive innovation across the other three verticals.
This presentation will provide a high level overview of these topics, including some of the major players in government, industry, nonprofits and academia. The last section of this presentation will focus on the workforce needed to expand Quantum 2.0 globally and how you might enter this amazing field.
Speaker
Donn M. Silberman is an SPIE Fellow, Optica Senior Member Emeritus and Past & Current President & Fellow of the Optical Society of Southern California. He has provided technical engineering, management, and education to many precision optics and optical instrument companies and educational entities in Southern California for 40 years. Since retiring in Feb. 2021, he has been focusing on quantum science education for people of all ages.Mr. Silberman holds a BS in Engineering Physics from the Univ. of Arizona (1983 - Honors in Physics) and an MS in Technology Management from Pepperdine University (1994). He was the Society of Physics Students president of the Univ. of Arizona Chapter from 1981-1983 and an Associate Counselor during the 1983-1984 academic year.
He founded the Optics Institute of Southern California in 2003 and maintains a personal website, that chronicles his optics education and outreach activities. A complete bio is on the OSSC website here. (Now the Quantum Optics Institute of Southern California)
He has been an advisor to Irvine Valley College’s Laser Electro-Optics Technology programs 1990s – 2020, which moved to Pasadena City College in 2021; he founded the UC Irvine’s Optical Engineering and Optical Instrument Design programs in 2009 and continues to serve as the Advisory Committee Chair. He received the UC Irvine Extension’s Dean's Outstanding Service Award in Nov 2012; And was the 2012-2013 Univ. of Arizona Honors College Advocate for Education Award Winner.
Mr. Silberman has been a volunteer with Vital Link, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing students for their future careers, for almost 10 years and serves on their Board of Directors. Mr. Silberman is a Member of QED-C, The Quantum Economic Development Consortium, where he volunteers on the Workforce Development - Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)
