NEOACM Remote Tech Talk: DESTINATION: SOFTWARE FREEDOM

Needs a location

NEOACM, Northeast Ohio ACM Professional Chapter is sponsoring a remote tech talk presented by the Free Software Foundation entitled:

DESTINATION: SOFTWARE FREEDOM

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a nonprofit with a worldwide
mission to promote computer user freedom. They defend the rights of all
software users. As our society grows more dependent on computers, the software we run is of critical importance to securing the future of a free society. Free software is about having control over the technology we use in our

  • Homes,
  • Schools
  • Businesses,

where computers work for our individual and communal benefit, not for proprietary software companies or governments who might seek to restrict and monitor us.

In this presentation, FSF Executive Director Zoë Kooyman and FSF
Campaigns Manager Greg Farough, will give an introduction to the
concept of software freedom and its philosophical underpinnings, as
well as the role it plays in ensuring software users around the globe
remain in control of their computing -- whether that's the laptop they
use for school, or the cell phone in their pocket.

The presentation will conclude with an overview of the FSF's work and current campaigns, especially the "Freedom Ladder" campaign, which encourages a gradual approach to rejecting proprietary software and adopting free software.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS

Zoë Kooyman, Executive Director

Kooyman joined the Free Software Foundation (FSF) as program manager in 2019, in charge of public activities and communications, and
became the Executive Director in February 2022. As program manager,
she led the FSF to new records for attendance and submissions at the
annual LibrePlanet conference, organizing and leading the conference
for three years [masked]). The 2020 event was converted into a
successful virtual conference in just five days at the onset of the
COVID-19 pandemic, and continues virtually for the time being.
Kooyman directed the development of a series of animated videos
highlighting and increasing awareness of important free software
issues. She also drove successful efforts in associate member
recruitment and fundraising.

Greg Farough, Campaigns Manager

Greg's introduction to free software came by way of the Punkcast video
blog in 2006, when intending to see a concert bootleg, they saw an
RMS speech instead. From that moment forward, they resolved to use
an exclusively free system. Greg has previously worked as a goat
herder, labor organizer, and tutor of Attic Greek.
