Fall Equinox Hike and Sunset Photos

Details

Join us for a relaxing evening! The fall equinox marks the last day of summer and the first day of autumn. An idealistic way to end this day is to spend the evening at Elk Island National Park which boasts about the most spectacular sunsets over Astotin Lake and the island when viewed from the beach.

Hopefully the timing is right and the sun is setting over the lake by the time we are done our short hike. That's all dependent upon clear skies, however some clouds make it interesting as they go by. Bring your camera!

We'll leisurely hike Lakeview Trail, 3.5 km, along the side of Astotin Lake. The trail has hills, then crosses through a cattle fence and then some more hills. It's never flat but never too steep. It has a small loop at the end and we return along the same trail back to the beach. If there is still time before sunset, we will head over to the Living Boardwalk trail to complete a total of 5 km.

What to bring
Bring energy snacks, water/liquids, head lamp or small flash light. Wear sturdy shoes and layers. Consider a hat, trekking poles, and bug spray. Remember your camera, optional binoculars and your fabulous personality!

We will meet at the Astotin Lake Facilities Building (Washrooms) on the north end of the main parking lot. Please plan to be there a few minutes before 6:30 pm. We want to depart for the hike right at 6:30 pm.

Cost
National Park passes are required or you can carpool with someone who already has a pass. If you want to carpool, meet us at Hardisty Pool at 5:30 pm. There is a courtesy $5 fee per person to pitch in for the gas.
