Trial by Trail: Second Helping
Assabet River Wildlife Refuge, 680 Winterberry Way, Sudbury, MA, USGet ready for Trial by Trail: Second Helping! The first one was such a success that we’re coming back for more. We’re heading into 2,357 acres of nature that the U.S. Army once used to store things that go "boom." It’s basically the only place in Massachusetts where you can birdwatch in a former WWII ammunition depot, making it the perfect spot to find a rare songbird and a concrete "igloo" bunker in the same selfie. The local landlords—mostly Blanding’s turtles and white-tailed deer—officially evicted the military years ago and now spend their days looking photogenic for hikers.
The trails are suspiciously flat, mostly because they used to be railroad tracks for hauling heavy artillery, so your knees can thank the 1940s logistics team later. Since these bunkers were built to be "battleship-proof" and the German Navy hasn't been spotted in Sudbury lately, we should be safe for a Sunday stroll. Just remember it’s a "Carry In, Carry Out" refuge; if you find a vintage ammo crate, it’s a cool souvenir in spirit, but please leave it for the turtles.
We’re meeting at the end of Old Marlborough Rd. Just a heads-up: even though some official descriptions might point you toward 680 Winterberry, our actual rendezvous point is at the very end of Old Marlborough Rd. Follow it until the pavement ends and the adventure begins! Parking at the trailhead is limited, so if the small lot is full, you might have to park along the road—just make sure your car isn't technically trespassing on turtle property.
This event is rain or shine, unless it’s absolutely coming down in buckets. In that case, we’ll skip the soggy hike and head straight to Pleasant Cafe (36 Main St. in Maynard) for lunch and beer at 12:30 PM. If the weather is against us and you aren't down for just the food/drinks, please edit your RSVP—I don't need to drive to Maynard to eat by myself! For those joining for lunch, there is a convenient municipal lot on Main St. It’ll be the perfect chance for us to sit down, get to know each other, and stay dry!
