Join us for an evening of coffee, conversation and ideas as we explore one of the apparent paradoxes of modern life: the more economically independent we become, the less self-sufficient we need to be.
Self-sufficiency is often treated as a virtue. We admire the idea of being able to provide everything for ourselves, grow our own food, make what we need and depend on nobody else.
But is self-sufficiency really the same thing as independence?
Consider something as simple as a cup of coffee. If you had to produce your cappuccino entirely by yourself, you would need to grow and process the coffee beans, raise a cow for the milk, grow cocoa for the chocolate, make the cup and somehow manufacture the equipment required to grind the beans and make the coffee.
You could work extraordinarily hard and still produce very little.
For most of human history, people were far more self-sufficient than we are today, and they were also far poorer. Prosperity grew as people became able to specialise, develop expertise and voluntarily exchange what they produced for the specialised productivity of others.
So what does it actually mean to be independent?
At this Capitalism & Coffee discussion, we will explore the difference between independence and self-sufficiency, why specialisation and the division of labour create wealth, why relying on the productive achievements of others does not require surrendering your own judgement, and how voluntary exchange allows independent people to achieve far more than any individual could produce alone.
This will be an informal discussion rather than a lecture, so bring your questions, arguments and ideas, and come prepared for good conversation.
