Big Schloss -Mill Mountain, GWNF, WV/VA Border
Let’s explore this great overlook two hours from DC. The peak of Big Schloss is a rocky outcropping which resembles a castle ("schloss" is German for "castle"). The views of Big Schloss as hikers approach it and the view from the top on the Trout Run Valley are stunning.
We start at the Wolf Gap Recreation Area and head up about 1,300 ft of the southern tip of Mill Mountain where we follow the ridge line north to the overlook. It’s about 4.5 miles round-trip.

What to Bring:
Good hiking shoes
Water
Snacks
Mascots are most welcome but must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
Meet Time: 10:45 am.
Where: Wolf Gap Recreation Area Parking Lot (Wardensville, WV)
Departure Time: 11:00 sharp.
The hike should take approximately five hours.
For those interested, we can later head over to the Woodstock Brew House (123 E Court St, Woodstock, VA 22664-1761) in nearby Woodstock for a hearty meal.
Carpooling is encouraged as parking spots may be difficult to come by!
In your RSVP please indicate if you need a ride. If you are coming by car and wouldn’t mind picking someone up at a convenient metro stop, please indicate how many people you can take. Hopefully we’ll have enough room for everyone. I can pick up three at the Braddock Road metro (yellow) or Dunn-Loring (orange).
Carpoolers, please chip in at least $15 each for gas.
