77 and mostly sunny with light winds. Let's paddle to the Ghost Ship and do some rockhounding along the way.
The Plan:
We'll meet at the Tanners Creek boat ramp in Lawrenceburg, IN. We'll paddle to the Ghost Ship and look for rocks on the Kentucky side of the river. Afterwards, we'll get food.
Details:
We'll meet at the auxiliary ramp at Tanner's Creek. From the parking lot, this ramp is to the left of the main ramp. This is an out-and-back paddle, so we won't need to run a shuttle. Once we're ready to head out, we'll take a right from the ramp and head to the Ohio river.
Once we get to the river, we'll immediately cross to the Kentucky side and head upriver. The paddle to the Ghost Ship is approximately 2 miles from the boat ramp. The Indiana side of the river through here is very deep and is made for barge traffic. The Kentucky side is shallow, sandy, and pretty nice. The best part is all of the rocks, fossils, and artifacts along here. We had two guys find arrowheads in this area last year. We'll take an hour or so to pick through and find some cool stuff before heading on to the Ghost Ship.
USS Sachem was the name of the Ghost Ship when it was still in service. You can look it up on the internet, if you would like to know more. There is a Wikipedia page for it and tells some of the rich and varied history of this ship. The Sachem isn't on the Ohio. It's up a small tributary called Taylor creek. We'll paddle a few hundred yards up the creek to get to the Ghost Ship. This is on private property and we will NOT be getting out and trespassing. Our viewing will strictly be from the water. Once we finish checking out the Sachem, we'll paddle back the way we came. Depending on the time and the group, we may stop for some more rockhounding.
AFTERWARDS:
After we load up and get ready to head home, we'll make our last stop of the day at Riverwatch in Lawrenceburg. This is a floating restaurant that serves seafood, sandwiches, and burgers. Last year when we went here, I had the best blackened Mahi that I have had since I lived in Florida over 30 years ago. Their seafood is legit! Did I mention that this is a FLOATING RESTAURANT on the Ohio river? So that's pretty cool! Come on out!
WARNINGS!!!
This is an OPEN WATER paddle with NO OVERHEAD cover and it's going to be SUNNY. Please plan accordingly with hat, sunblock, and fluids.
This is a FLAT WATER paddle. This is like paddling on a lake with no real current to help or hinder us. Unfortunately, you'll have to get their under your own power. Please know your abilities.
The event fee for this adventure will be $25/person. Solo kayak rentals will be $60 and tandems (2-person SOT kayaks) will be $100. Please message me if you need a rental.
I hope to see a bunch of you out there. This is a very fun event!
Please let me know if you are coming to the restaurant. If we get enough interest, we may need to make a reservation.
