Loudoun Heights Hike at Harpers Ferry

Details
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, one of Adventuring's favorite towns, is laced with trails as historic as they are scenic. We'll start this excursion in the historic Lower Town, then climb the stone steps on the Appalachian Trail to the famous Jefferson Rock overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Soon we'll cross the Shenandoah on the highway bridge and start our steep ascent of Loudoun Heights. At the crest, we'll enjoy stunning views up and down the Potomac while we have lunch. We then retrace our steps back across the Shenandoah. Total length of this strenuous out-and-back hike is about 8.5 miles, with roughly 1900 feet of cumulative elevation gain.
We will carpool from the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station, leaving promptly at 8:30 a.m. Bring water and pack a lunch or snack or pick up something at Sheetz where we will make a brief stop on the way out. Also, these steep and rocky trails call for good hiking shoes. There will be an optional stop at the Harpers Ferry Brewery or other eatery on the way home. Costs will be the $5 trip fee and $11 for the carpool fee if you aren't a driver.
