West Hyattsville Metrorail Station at Bus Bay C, Hyattsville, MD
This 7-mile urban hike will start at the West Hyattsville Metro (Green Line). We will first use the Northwest Branch Trail (Rachel Carson Greenway on new maps) to head to Rhode Island Avenue, near the site of the March 1913 Suffragette Motorcade. We will then pass through a neighborhood park and make our way to the Exorcist House, which has been the subject of a NPR news story recently.

We will cross back into Mount Rainier and pass by various art galleries, an African American Museum, The Glut Co-Op, and Joe’s Movement Emporium. Before crossing the boundary into DC, we will see the boyhood home of Playwright/Activist Larry Kramer on 28th Street. Once in DC, we will continue on Rhode Island Avenue, passing by Zeke's Coffee on our way to the beautiful Langdon Park/Chuck Brown Park for a quick lunch. After lunch we will head to the Rhode Island Metro (Red Line), where our journey will end by mid-afternoon.

Meet at 10 a.m. in front of the West Hyattsville Metro. Bring water, a snack/lunch and the $5 trip fee. There may be mud on the Northwest Branch Trail, so bring appropriate footwear.

In this version of our continued series of Greenbelt exploration hikes, we will promenade through the city in a funky figure-8 shaped hike. We will see the old, the newer, and the natural green space surrounding one of the first planned communities in the United States of the 1930s New Deal era.

Our easy-to-moderate hike of approximately 7 miles is on paved and natural trails with some elevation changes.

Our hike begins in the heart of Old Greenbelt and winds through the historic city and small walkable community as we pass by some of the historic homes.

Next, we will make our way over to Greenbelt Park for lunch with a quick trip into nature inside the beltway. After a small circuit in Greenbelt Park, we will exit the park and climb to Greenbelt’s North End before finding our way back to Old Greenbelt.

Meet at Greenbelt Metro Station at 11:00am, where we will form carpools just outside the station entrance. Bring lunch, water, comfortable shoes, and any other urban hiking gear you may need. Trip fees will be $5.

During the darkest nights of the year, we often seek light! Join us on an easy 5 mile hike around Washington, DC. We'll visit Union Station, The U.S. Capitol, National Mall, The Ellipse and City Center DC to take in all the sights and sounds of this winter season. We will finish our hike outside of the Downtown Holiday Market, where we can refresh ourselves with a hot beverage and/or sweet treat. The holiday market is adjacent to the National Portrait Gallery.

Meet at the Navy Memorial—just outside the Archives/Navy Memorial station at 5:30pm. Please arrive a few minutes early so we can begin promptly. In the spirit of the holiday season, the trip fee for this hike is only $1.

Cross Country Ski weekend trip to the Canaan Valley, WV
Fri-Sun, February 2-4, 2024

They say we might get a colder and snowier winter this year-- we'll keep our fingers crossed! We’ll plan to spend the weekend skiing at the White Grass Nordic Center in the Canaan Valley, WV about three hours from DC. The Canaan Valley has some of the best snow for cross-country in the Mid-Atlantic area, and White Grass the most extensive network of trails for all levels and services for skiers.

We’ll drive up Friday evening, stay in cabins at Blackwater Falls State Park Friday and Saturday nights, and return Sunday. We’ll ski at White Grass Saturday and maybe Sunday. There are also some downhill ski areas in the vicinity. Or on our return Sunday we might stop along the way to hike at Seneca Rocks.

We’ll share two cabins at Blackwater Falls, 6-8 people per cabin, each with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, dining area and kitchen, and we’ll plan to eat there, at least dinner Saturday and for breakfasts.

Participants will share in the costs of the cabins ($100 - $180 per participant for the weekend, depending on the final count), and in the cost of the group food and beverages.

Participants are responsible for their own costs at White Grass:
- trail fees ($25)
- equipment (skis, boot, poles) rental ($25)
- lessons ($10 or $25)

Participants are responsible for their own travel to the Canaan Valley. We will organize carpools, for which there will be a fee to the driver of approx. $35 per rider.

A $50 deposit will be required to secure a spot on the trip.
