Table for 8 at Kie-Gol-Lanee, a Oaxacan (SW Mexican) restaurant in Logan Square. The menu features many interesting items, including chapulines (grasshoppers), huitlacoche (corn fungus), grilled quail, and stewed rabbit. The restaurant has been featured in numerous publications, including Fooditor, Eater Chicago, the New York Times, the Chicago Reader and the Michelin Guide.
From the Michelin Guide (Bib Gourmand rated):
"If you think you know what to order from this kitchen because you’ve been to Oaxaca, just wait a minute and listen to your fellow diners. They too have made the journey and their knowledge could probably draw a map of the city. Located in the heart of Little Saigon, this quiet restaurant has been thriving thanks to a clientele who knows quality when they taste it.The likes of soft, just-steamed pork tamales with a delicately spiced green mole; or wide, crackly tlayudas piled high with chorizo are presented to your table with the utmost care. The focused menu may have a number of highlights but one favorite is the Cornish hen roasted until its skin is crisp as a chip and then smothered with a dark, faintly sweet mole made from a riot of layered spices."
From Fooditor:
"Black corn fungus (Huitlacoche) doesn’t sound appealing so let’s just call it Mexican truffles for now. The way they use it here brings out that earthy flavor we yearn for when eating truffles. What’s even better is the cheese they merge it with to form my perfect quesadilla. That makes a a great starter to prepare you for the cod dish which is wrapped in banana leaf cooked with rice and vegetables. When you first open the Bacalao Blanco En Hojas De Platano dish, it releases an aroma that will make you float in mid-air.
Tip: Always look out for the venison stew and be adventurous and try the Grasshopper tacos."
