Highlights of Adirondack Mountain Reserve
Details
With the start of November, there is no more need for a reservation at AMR, so lets take advantage of that! While this hike is rated A based on the top line numbers, it will overall be a moderate day except for the overall mileage, about half of it is on Lake Road.
Top line numbers: 10.5 miles, 2300 feet of elevation. We will hike up Gill Brook, over to Fish Hawk cliffs and then to Indian Head which has the iconic view of the High Peaks. From there we'll go down to Rainbow Falls and view them from the Weld Trail (the "Don't Be a Dropout" sign you may have seen) and in to the base of the falls. We'll then go along the West River trail to Beaver Meadows falls before we hike back to the road and out. Depending on weather and desire of the group we may not hit all the stops after Indian Head.
This will be a shoulder season hike. It is early enough in the season we shouldn't need snowshoes, but expect to need microspikes for ice we may find and to carry some extra layers. With the time change sunset will be about 430. We should be back to the cars by then, but just in case please bring a headlamp. Carpooling will also be available from the exit 9 park and ride (fire road).
