About us

Hello there, welcome to the ALM family! My name is Cody, I am the founder of this incredible community 🀠 I started ALM Edmonton 2 years ago, and it's been an amazing journey since then! ALM Edmonton is the city's best place to practice languages and make new friends, and I am VERY excited to bring this community and energy to the beautiful city of Calgary! You can see how successful ALM Edmonton has been since it was founded 2 years ago on Meetup here ⬇

I have decided to settle down and make Calgary my permanent home, so I am completely dedicated to making this community the best it can be! It is my mission to provide an exciting, dynamic, and non-judgmental space for people to make real life social connections with people in the languages they are learning. ALM Edmonton has one of the highest ratings on Meetup, because providing a high-quality, comfortable, and stimulating experience is very important to me and the other leaders of our community.

I'm a native speaker of English, and I can also speak (in order of proficiency) German, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Korean, and Japanese. These also happen to be the most popular languages at ALM, but other languages are also available depending on who shows up!

We hold 5 different spectacular events, which are...

  1. Languages and Beer (Every Friday at Bank and Baron 7 pm)
  2. Walk and Talk (Every Sunday at North Glenmore Park 2 pm)
  3. Languages and Coffee (Replacement event for Walk and Talk when the weather is bad at the Devonian Gardens in the Core)
  4. Campfire Social (Approximately once a month on Sunday at North Glenmore Park 6 pm, replaces Walk and Talk on that day)
  5. Karaoke Night (Approximately once every two months, replaces Languages and Beer on that day, location still TBD)

The format of the events are explained in more details in their respective event pages.

All ALM events are free, but donations are highly appreciated due to the cost of organizing such a wonderful community πŸ₯°

PLEASE READ
This is an 18+ event!

How it works: When you sign up to the event, you will be prompted to write down which language(s) you would like to practice and what your native language is. Based off this information, I will set up language-specific tables at the meetup. The tables will be clearly marked with flags.

If you would like to practice multiple languages, feel free to bounce around! There is only one rule at Languages and Beer: you can only speak the language of the table you are sitting at! People attending this event should be at least a little bit conversational in their target language, otherwise you might find yourself not having a great time.

Languages and Beer will take place every Friday from 7:00 until 11:00, unless specifically stated otherwise. You will be required to purchase at least one drink (doesn't need to be alcoholic) out of respect for the venue.

All ALM events are free, but if you are financially stable I would very much appreciate a cash donation at the meetup or through our GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/7448331d

Lastly, I understand if you are unable to come, but please at least let me know beforehand. Being a no show is not cool, and it messes up the organization and flow of the event. If you are a no show, you will be instantly removed from the group. In addition, behavior that is seen as sexual harassment, aggressive, creepy, or just plain uncomfortable will result in a ban. People come to our events to practice languages and make friends, not to get hit on, so please be respectful!

If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a direct message or post a comment. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!
