See all- Belle Haven Park to River FarmBelle Haven Park, Virginia, Alexandria, VA
Let's meet at Belle Haven Park and go for a hike to George Washington's River Farm!
River Farm is the northernmost part of George Washington's extensive property in Virginia. Today it is home to the American Horticultural Society. The estate house has been restored and expanded, and it is surrounded by natural and formal garden areas. The estate's Kentucky coffee trees are descendants of those Washington introduced to Virginia when he returned from surveying the Ohio River Valley. The estate's oldest tree is a large Osage Orange, believed to be the largest in the United States.
❶ What we'll do:
- From in front of the drinking fountain in Belle Haven Park, we'll walk south 3 miles to River Farm along Mount Vernon Trail, Southdown Rd, and Kent Rd. After a half-hour break to enjoy the gardens and the view of the Potomac River, we'll retrace our steps to Belle Haven Park.
- The total hike is 6 to 7 miles and should take at least 2.5 hours. The surface is paved and relatively flat throughout, with a couple of stretches of boardwalk.

- Coming from Old Town Alexandria along George Washington Pkwy, it is the first exit on the left after passing a Shell station south of the golf course. See https://goo.gl/maps/ThvZDmcR2Wq

- Cleveland Park, National Cathedral, Klingle TrailCleveland Park, Washington, DC
Sunday will be sunny and warm, a perfect day to tromp out of Cleveland Park up to the National Cathedral and back. The hike will combine glorious architecture, the most expensive neighborhood in DC, the least-known best trail in the city, and a shortcut through a park past the International School on to Macomb Street.
We have tweaked this route over the past few months and it is now an even more photogenic route. The featured photo is from a hike earlier this Spring.
There is an old-style Italian deli named Vace's a block from the hike start/finish point that has great pizzas by the slice.
❶ What we'll do:
- Let's meet at Noon at Cleveland Park Metro (on the TARGET side of Conn. Ave.) and proceed to the National Cathedral. From there, we will tromp down the Klingle Valley Trail and swing out on the Rock Creek Trail and then hook around towards the Pierce-Klingle House and back up to the Metro via Porter Street. Beach Drive trail
- Total hiking time should be slightly over 2 hours. The surface is mostly paved. After reaching the Cathedral, it's fairly level followed by a downhill jaunt to Rock Creek and uphill back to the Metro.
