First Day Hike at Leesylvania State Park
Details
Let's go for New Year's Day hike in Leesylvania State Park!
❶ What we'll do:
- To get started, we'll depart from the front of the Visitor Center, walk southeast to the shoreline, and follow the Potomac Trail (yellow) northeast along the shoreline past Picnic Shelter #1 almost to the Fishing Pier, circle around the Lighthorse Harry Lee Monument, and return to the trail junction in front of the Visitor Center. The surface is a mix of gravel and paved paths and is fairly flat. This part is a short loop of only about 0.67 miles and should take 20-30 minutes.
- After picking up anyone who may have arrived late, we'll walk southeast back to the shoreline and follow the shoreline southwest along the Potomac Trail (yellow), Bushey Point Trail (green), Powell's Creek Trail (purple), and the Potomac Heritage Trail (blue) to a hilltop northwest of the park entrance before turning around and retracing our steps to the Visitor Center. The surface is a mix of dirt, gravel, and paved paths, with a boardwalk near the railroad bridge, and about 200 feet of elevation gain. This part is out-and-back, about 3.83 miles, and should take around an hour and a half.
- The total distance is about 4.5 miles and should take about 2 hours. This is an easy hike.
