Wines
Carpineto Chianti Classico Reserva 2020
Score: 93 pts. WS
This beefy red relies on its dense texture, concentrated flavors of black cherry and blackberry fruit, and muscular tannins to get its message across. Wild herb, iron and earth notes add depth, while the finish is long and spicy.
#25 WS top 100 wines
Cortonesi Brunello Di Montalcino 2019
Score: 95 pts WS
Offering black currant, blackberry, floral, mineral and underbrush flavors, this red shows some muscle, ending with a terrific aftertaste of ripe fruit, mineral and vegetal accents. This feels balanced overall, but needs some time for the dense tannins to integrate fully
Mazzei Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2011
Score: 93 pts. RP
The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a standout wine. This vintage offers the broadest sense of intensity and generosity. The wine is also distinguished by dark fruit and spice that stand tall with clear identities.
Mazzei Philip Toscana Red 2019
Score 94 pts. WA
This wine is a symbolic bridge from the Old World to the New. The Mazzei 2019 Philip is an all-Tuscan expression of Cabernet Sauvignon (with a tiny part Cabernet Franc) that delivers rich texture, ripeness and ripe fruit.
The wine is named after Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), who was a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson. The two men reportedly exchanged winemaking tips and vineyard techniques. The 2019 vintage nails that proverbial sweet spot between softness, structure, fruit and spice. This is a plush, fruit-forward and balanced Tuscan red
