Trexler Nature Preserve (5 miles)
Details
Second update 12/8/25:
I just scouted out part of the planned route for tomorrow. Here’s what you should know if you are thinking about coming:
-
some areas have dry trail, some areas are solid ice, some areas are crunchy packed snow. But more often than not, it’s some combination of the three of those. This includes the inclines that we will be traversing. Unless we deviate from the planned route, we will have two uphills and two down hills that we need to navigate.
-
I did not wear micro spikes today, but you may find them helpful or want to bring them along just in case. I will have mine with me tomorrow in case I decide I want to have them on. I highly recommend having a set of trekking poles with you though.
-
projected temperature at our start time of 10 AM is only 20° . We will stop for brief breaks on our assents to wait for the group to catch up, but besides that we probably won’t take very many breaks just so that we can keep moving and keep warm.
-
looking forward to seeing whoever decides to venture out with me tomorrow morning! I just wanted to make you aware of what you will encounter so that you can make a decision based on your comfort level with the condition conditions.

Update 12/4/25:
Be prepared for snow/ice/mud on this hike. Trexler had 3-4” of snow and while a few sunny patches have melted, given the cold temps in the forecast there will likely still be significant snow and some icy areas for our hike. Wear waterproof footwear, layered clothing, and I highly recommend having trekking poles also. I hiked there today and did not need microspikes but if there is more melt and refreezing you might consider having them along just in case. Don’t forget hydration and a snack if you think you’ll need one while we’re out.
Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend or change your mind given the conditions.
This hike will incorporate most of the Fireman and Elk Viewing Trails as well as a small bit of the Border Trail. We will have several relatively short inclines/declines but the trail is mostly packed dirt. This route will take us along the Jordan Creek for a bit and we may get a glimpse of the bison and elk herds. Be prepared for muddy conditions in spots if there has been recent precipitation. Wear hiking shoes with good traction and poles or a hiking stick may be helpful. Rain or snow cancels hike.
