Eagle’s Nest via Sand Spring & Tom Lowe Trails Loop
Details
The 9.4 mile hike begins at the PA State Game Lands 110 parking lot on Northkill Road and follows a game lands service road before transitioning onto the Sand Spring Trail (blue blazes), crossing Northkill Creek and climbing steadily alongside a stream to the historic rock-walled Sand Spring and the junction with the Tom Lowe Trail. The route 0then briefly joins the Appalachian Trail, traversing rocky terrain and game commission burn areas, before turning onto the Eagles Nest Trail and reaching the Eagles Nest lookout about a mile later.
The return follows the Tom Lowe Trail (orange blazes), descending steeply from the ridge, crossing several streams—including a wooden bridge near mile eight—and following Northkill Creek back to the parking area. Expect rocky footing in places.
Come prepared with sturdy footwear, snacks, lunch, and plenty of fluids; the hike will be canceled in the event of adverse weather.
