## ποΈ ALPINE TREKKERS DIFFICULTY SYSTEM
We use a 1β10 difficulty scale to help members choose activities appropriate to their experience, fitness and mountain skills.
Level 1 β Easy / Beginner
Up to 5 km | Up to 100 m elevation gain
Relaxed introductory hikes for people starting their outdoor journey.
Level 2 β Beginner+
5β8 km | 100β200 m elevation gain
Mild climbs and generally manageable terrain. Suitable for beginners ready for a little more challenge.
Level 3 β Moderate
8β10 km | 200β500 m elevation gain
Some hiking experience and reasonable fitness recommended. May include uneven or rocky terrain and moderate climbs.
Level 4 β Intermediate
10β15 km | 500β1,000 m elevation gain
Longer routes and sustained climbs requiring good fitness, stamina and some mountain hiking experience.
Level 5 β Intermediate+
15β20 km | 1,000β1,600 m elevation gain
Demanding mountain routes involving steeper climbs, rugged terrain and longer periods of sustained effort. Previous mountain hiking experience recommended.
Level 6 β Advanced
20β25 km | 1,600β2,200 m elevation gain
Strenuous mountain routes requiring strong fitness, endurance and solid previous mountain hiking experience. May include steep, rugged or exposed sections.
Level 7 β Advanced+
25β30 km | 2,200β3,000 m elevation gain
Highly demanding mountain objectives requiring excellent fitness, endurance and significant mountain experience. Long duration, sustained elevation gain and challenging terrain should be expected.
Level 8 β Expert
30+ km | 3,000+ m elevation gain
Exceptionally demanding mountain objectives requiring extensive experience, excellent endurance and thorough preparation. May involve significant altitude, exposure, difficult terrain and very long days.
Level 9 β Extreme / Technical
Route dependent
Advanced technical mountain objectives that may involve significant exposure, scrambling, rope work, difficult navigation, scree, snow, ice or glacial terrain. Relevant technical skills, previous experience and specialized equipment may be required.
Level 10 β Expedition / Mountaineering
Expedition dependent
Major multi-day, high-altitude and/or technical mountain objectives requiring extensive preparation, appropriate experience, strong physical conditioning and specialized equipment. Participation requirements will depend on the expedition.
β οΈ IMPORTANT
Distance and elevation gain are guidelines, not the sole measure of difficulty. Terrain, exposure, scrambling, altitude, weather, temperature, technical requirements, pace and duration can significantly increase the challenge of an activity.
Always read the individual event description carefully before registering. Each event will specify its actual distance, elevation, terrain, expected duration, required experience and equipment.
Choose your level responsibly, progress gradually, and respect the mountains. ποΈ
Important: Distance and elevation alone do not determine difficulty. Terrain, exposure, scrambling, altitude, weather, temperature, pace, technical requirements and duration can substantially increase the challenge. The event description will provide the specific requirements for each activity.
## π± NEW TO ALPINE TREKKERS?
Welcome to the community! Whether you're completely new to hiking or already have mountain experience, Alpine Trekkers offers opportunities to explore, improve and progress.
If you're new to hiking, we recommend starting with Levels 1β3 (Beginner to Moderate). These activities are a good way to understand your fitness, become familiar with mountain terrain and learn what equipment, hydration and preparation work best for you.
If you already have hiking experience, choose your level based on your recent experience, fitness and the specific event requirements β not simply on the level you have completed before.
Levels 4β5 (Intermediate to Intermediate+) require progressively stronger fitness, stamina and mountain experience.
Levels 6β7 (Advanced to Advanced+) are intended for experienced hikers with strong endurance and solid mountain experience.
Levels 8β10 (Expert to Expedition/Mountaineering) may require extensive mountain experience, technical skills, specialized equipment, altitude experience and/or specific preparation. Additional participation requirements may apply.
Progress gradually. Completing one level does not automatically mean you are ready for the next. Distance, elevation, terrain, weather, pace and technical difficulty can vary significantly between events.
Our goal is not to reach the highest level as quickly as possible β it is to help members build experience, confidence, fitness and mountain skills responsibly over time.
ποΈ Start where you are. Build your experience. Respect your limits. Keep progressing.
### π BEFORE JOINING AN EVENT
Please read the complete event description before RSVPing. Check the stated difficulty, distance, elevation, duration, terrain, required experience, equipment, water requirements, meeting instructions and any participation fee.
Members are responsible for selecting activities appropriate to their own experience and physical condition and for arriving with the required equipment and supplies.
Outdoor activities involve inherent risks, and conditions can change. Routes, schedules or activities may therefore be modified when circumstances require it. Safety and responsible decision-making take priority over reaching a destination or summit.
Please respect the event leader, fellow participants, local communities, wildlife and the natural environment.
### π MORE THAN HIKING
Alpine Trekkers is also a community.
Our members come from different nationalities, cultures, professions and backgrounds, connected by a shared interest in mountains and outdoor adventure.
We want our events to provide opportunities to explore new places, improve fitness, develop outdoor experience, meet people and build lasting friendships.
Whether your goal is completing your first UAE mountain hike, preparing for Kilimanjaro, joining an international trek or simply spending more time outdoors, there is a path for progression within the Alpine Trekkers community.
### π€ OUR FOUNDER
Alpine Trekkers is led by Chogo Ree (Siddiq Fegum), whose mountain journey began in 2006 as a porter and developed into professional guiding and expedition leadership.
His experience includes mountain and trekking environments in the UAE and internationally, including Kilimanjaro, the Karakoram/K2 region, Everest Base Camp, Elbrus, the Atlas Mountains and Sabah.
That experience helped shape Alpine Trekkers around practical mountain knowledge, preparation, progressive training and a genuine connection with nature.
