About us
We are a group of diverse skiers and riders active in cross country, telemark, alpine, and/or snowboarding based out of Boston area. Our leaders run both backcountry and resort trips in White and Green mountains. We are organized under the Appalachia Mountain Club (AMC), which is a large collection of small groups like ours. AMC offers a structure for leadership training, peer-approved leaders, and workshops taught by volunteer instructors to help others improve their skills and participate at a higher level. Our trips are open to everyone based on ability, although participants in backcountry trips are usually screened to insure they don’t end up somewhere they don’t belong. (New England backcountry can be variable). We are NOT a young singles group, retirees on skis, or Men on a Mission. We are diverse in the style and ability of our trips and the ethnicity and age of our members. We are serious about skiing with competent leadership, but loose enough to have fun on the way. So be adventurous! Check us out and be part of our fun.
It is very important to read the full trip descriptions first, not just the trip titles, before RSVPing. Thank you.

Nordic BC Tour to Livermore Pass from Waterville Valley
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Skiing | Backcountry
Difficulty: 4 - Moderate
Trip Leader(s): Michael Barry, Margaret Olson, Nick Georgantas, Jim Hutchinson
Registration Type: Application
Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UUN0000029Bfp
Audience: EveryoneDescription: Join us for a Nordic BC ski tour to Livermore Pass from Waterville Valley . This tour is on the Livermore Road>Trail dirt roadbed. From a technical skill perspective, it’s an easy BC Nordic tour so its perfect tour for advanced groomed trail skiers who want to try some BC. Typical late winter conditions should be favorable with deeper snow that should soften up by mid-morning but most snow bridges over water crossing still in place. Due to the distance and vertical, we rate the trip as vigorous by the club’s trip rating system . The first (and last) 2.5 miles are on Waterville Valley’s groomed trail system. The trip is about 12.5 miles/2500 feet of rise, and we expect to average about 2.5 mi/hr.
We have four leaders and plan on splitting the group. Once we get higher up there is one potentially tricky stream crossing. Equipment: Skiers should have BC touring skis with a metal edge, NNN-BC bindings/boots and poles with wider baskets for deeper snow. A ski of less than a 68mm tip to fit into groomed tracks is recommended for fast access and egress. Full skins are not required, but if your skis come with “kicker” skins that attach to the fish scale area we recommend bringing them. Bring a day pack with appropriate spare clothing, lunch and fluids; it should be less than 10-12 pounds.
Meet at the Livermore Trailhead (South) parking lot at 0900 to be prepared for ski off at 0915. We plan to be back by about 4:00pm. Our turnaround time is 1:30pm regardless of where we are! This trip is coordinated with several other chapter uphill, AT, Alpine and Nordic ski trips in the area this day and we are having an optional combined après ski at the Common Man Foster’s Boiler Room pub in Plymouth, NH after to celebrate a great ski season.Reminder: Please click the RSVP link above to register!

Backcountry ski and ride day at Cooley Jericho Glades
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Skiing | Backcountry
Difficulty: 2 - Relaxed
Trip Leader(s): Mark Lepage, Stephen Baker
Registration Type: Application
Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX00000101YD
Audience: EveryoneDescription: Overview Join us for a day of backcountry skiing and riding in the Granite Backcountry Alliance Cooley Jericho Glade
Newly developed in 2019, “Cool J Glade” is similar to Crescent Ridge Glade as it contains jaw dropping views on the ascent of Mt Lafayette. The mid-rage skintrack gradually meanders its way to four sporty glade lines ranging from 400 to 800+ vertical feet, with plenty of features, drops, large yellow birches and views to make any tour worthwhile.
Our plan is to ascend the established skin track up to the summit of Cole Hill (2600’) and ski down one or more of the 4 available gladed lines. Participants should be prepared for a full day in the backcountry under winter conditions that will require appropriate clothing and layers (no cotton please) as well as food and water or other fluids.
Skiers/Riders must have familiarity with their gear and be comfortable skiing/riding black diamond-level terrain under variable conditions
Participants will be asked about past skiing experience before being approved to join the trip. Our group will travel at a moderate pace and all participants should be prepared for vigorous aerobic exercise, likely involving 3 plus miles and, potentially, over 3000 vertical feet of climbing (“skinning”)
We'll be meeting at the parking lot for the Franconia Town Hall to consolidate cars as the parking for the glade itself is very limited
For those needing rental of alpine touring or splitboard gear: AMC is pleased to offer substantially reduced pricing through a local retailer. Further details available upon request. AMC Trip Polic y Cost Adult $20 member/$20 non-member Cancellations made at least two weeks prior to the trip will be refunded in full, minus PayPal transaction fees. Cancellations made less than two weeks prior to the trip will only be refunded (minus PayPal transaction fees) after the event if another participant can be found to fill the slot.
Our primary plan and goal is to ski this glade but if conditions (lack of snow) make skiing at Cooley Jericho impossible we will offer an inbounds uphill day at Tenney Mountain as an alternative. Tenney requires the purchase of a $20 day pass to uphill ski at their mountain. We'll communicate with confirmed attendees if this becomes the situation and offer refunds to confirmed participants that would not be interested in that alternative.Suggested Equipment List Gear Skis / Snowboard w/ boots, poles and climbing skins Backpack Helmet Goggles & sunglasses Cell phone Clothing Waterproof shell – jacket & pants Down / synthetic insulating jacket Thermal top & bottom – lightweight / midweight suggested Additional base and / or midlayer(s) Winter hats (2) – medium / heavyweight & lightweight suggested Gloves (2 sets) – medium / heavyweight (waterproof) & lightweight suggested Socks Neck gaiter Food & Drink Water – insulated or otherwise protected from freezing Lunch Snacks + energy bars, etc Other Suggestions Sunscreen, lip balm Hand warmers Baseball hat First aid kit w/ moleskin, ibuprofen, bandages, survival blanket, etc Knife or multi-tool Repair kit – duct tape, straps Trail map

Audience: EveryoneDescription: Nordic Skiing at Waterville Valley Join us for a day of gliding along the 70+ km of groomed trails at the Waterville Valley Nordic trails, just 2 hours from Boston. This trip is coordinated with several other chapter ski trips for an optional apres ski social at a pub in Campton or Plymouth, NH. Meet at the Nordic Center in Town Square at 0930 to meet your leaders. This trip is rated overall as moderate per AMC’s Trip Rating System . The leaders plan on breaking out the trip to a green-blue group skiing about 15-20 km for the day at about 4-5kph and a blue-black group doing about 20-25 km at 5-6kph. Faster skiers and skaters are welcome but you may be skiing mostly ahead of the leaders. Both groups will be out on the trails all day, so skiers need to carry their lunch. Due to conditions leaders may need to alter the trip. This trip isn’t geared to beginners. L ight, classic XC skis narrower than 62mm tips be the best gear for the groomed trails/tracks. Bring a lunch or buy it at the Jugtown store on Town Square. Gear list: very small daypack or fanny pack with 1l water, snacks/lunch, spare jacket, lip balm, sunglasses, spare gloves and balaclava or hat. Check the weather and wear/have appropriate clothing. We plan on starting at the Nordic Center in Town Square, but if conditions are marginal on the Swans Way trail; we will take the bus that leaves at 14 and 44 minutes after the hour to the Livermore lot and ski the north end where conditions are typically much better; then ski/walk back. Participants should self-pay the $28 trail fee. Waterville Valley is an Indy Pass resort in case you have one. Please check the Waterville Valley Nordic website for details current trail and snow conditions. Recommend all take a map from the Nordic center and/or use a smartphone GPS app for navigation. Rental skis, boot, poles are available at the Nordic center if needed at your additional cost. Recommend filing out a rental equipment waiver in advance on-line for expediency.
