Description: This backcountry ski tour through Perkins Notch in the Wild River Wilderness area connects the Jackson East Pasture trailhead to the Carter Notch Jackson Ski Touring Trailhead, approximately 12 miles and 1000' of overall elevation gain using hiking trails (Bog Brook, Wild River, East Branch, Bald Land). This is an area that does not get a lot of winter visits so we should be rewarded with signs of moose and otters. Good snow cover is required for the several water crossings on Bog Brook and to make the downhill to the East Branch trail more enjoyable. Participants should be prepared for a full day backcountry experience - water crossings, drainage crossings, breaking trail, controlling speed on downhills. Nordic backcountry skis with metal edges are a necessity.
