About us
Thanks for being a part of our Meetup group, and AMC Boston 20s and 30s. For those of you who are new, this email is to give some basic information about how you can get more involved with us and get on even more trips (our other websites have more trip postings than you’ll find here on Meetup!)
AMC Boston 20's and 30's is a group of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), dedicated to encouraging people in their 20s and 30s to get involved in the AMC and enjoy the outdoors.
With many volunteer leaders and co-leaders, we offer a variety of activities and events (both online and in-person). You may find us leading day hikes, backpacking, social events, local walks, trail maintenance, conservation work, kayaking, mountain biking, bicycling, skiing, camping, ice skating, and other activities. We sponsor trips throughout the year, most of which involve exploring different regions of New England. Check out some photos of our activities here!
If you want to be kept up to date with even more of our events, be sure to check the official postings at activities.outdoors.org. We do cross post some events to meetup but you have to register via the link in the description (signing up on Meetup does not approve you for the trip).
There are other ways to stay engaged with us.
[Outdoors Postings](https://activities.outdoors.org/s/activity-directory?chapters=0015000001Sg061AAB&audiences=20’s & 30’s): activities.outdoors.org is the official site for all AMC trip postings (everything gets posted here first). This link filters the 20s and 30s committee trips.

20s & 30s book club: American Canopy
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Social | Local Socials
Difficulty: 1 - Accessible
Trip Leader(s): Catherine Bentsen
Registration Type: Registration
Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX0000011K49
Audience: 20’s & 30’sDescription: Join AMC Boston 20s & 30s for a nature-themed book club! The book club is held roughly every other month on topics of nature, wildlife, and the environment. In anticipation of America's 250th anniversary this year, our April and June books will explore the intersection of America's history and natural resources. For our June book, we will read the book “American Canopy: Trees, Forests, and the Making of a Nation" by Eric Rutkow. Discussion will be held on Tuesday, June 2 from 7-9pm at Craft Foods Revolution Hall in Lexington. Anyone is welcome to join, whether you’ve read all, part, or none of the book! An interest in the book topic is the only prerequisite for joining.
Synopsis: Like many of us, historians have long been guilty of taking trees for granted. Yet the history of trees in America is no less remarkable than the history of the United States itself--from the majestic white pines of New England, which were coveted by the British Crown for use as masts in navy warships, to the orange groves of California, which lured settlers west.... America--if indeed it existed--would be a very different place without its millions of acres of trees. As American Canopy shows, trees were essential to the early years of the republic and indivisible from the country's rise as both an empire and a civilization. As symbols of liberty, community, and civilization, trees are perhaps the loudest silent figures in our country's history.... Today, few people think about where timber comes from, but most of us share a sense that to destroy trees is to destroy part of ourselves and endanger the future.Reminder: Please click the RSVP link above to register!

20s & 30s Trail Work Weekend at Cold River Camp
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Volunteer Opportunities | Conservation
Difficulty: 2 - Relaxed
Trip Leader(s): Catherine Bentsen, Kate O'Brien
Registration Type: Application
Please Click Here to RSVP: https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UVX0000017q9N
Audience: 20’s & 30’sDescription: Join the Chatham Trails Association (CTA) for their Spring Trail Work Weekend in the Evans Notch region of the White Mountains from June 5-7, 2026! Our AMC Boston 20s & 30s group of about 20 people will share the camp with other CTA volunteers as well as hikers from the AMC NH 20s & 30s.
REGISTRATION When you sign up for the trip, please note if you have done trailwork before and what type. This is not a requirement for attendance, but helps us plan. Closer to the trip, a leader will send a supplementary form to solicit information about carpooling, lodging preferences, dietary restrictions, and other logistical information.
TRAILWORK Trailwork will consist mainly of Level 1 maintenance: clearing water bars and drainages, clearing blowdowns, and brushing the trail corridor as needed. CTA will provide tools, personal protective equipment, and instruction - no prior trail work experience is necessary. Some hiking will be needed to get to the trailwork sites. Depending on which section of trail you work on, the hike distances may be 1-2 miles each way on easy terrain ranging to 4-5 miles each way on vigorous terrain. We will work a full day on Saturday and a part day on Sunday.
LODGING Lodging for the weekend will be in rustic cabins at AMC Cold River Camp in Chatham NH. Cabins will be shared with 2-4 people. Weather can be chilly in early June - cabins are unheated but each has a fireplace or woodstove. Bring your own sleeping bag or bed linens and blankets. The cabins are a 5-10 minute walk on dirt paths from the parking area. The Camp has centralized hot showers and toilet facilities. More information about AMC Cold River Camp can be found on their website ( https://www.coldrivercamp.org/ ).
MEALS Meals are provided for the weekend, including on Friday (dinner), Saturday (breakfast, trail lunch, dinner), and Sunday (breakfast, trail lunch). If you have dietary restrictions, please note that on your registration form.
CARPOOLING In addition to noting your carpool availability on your registration, a Google Sheet will be shared for participants to offer and request rides for the weekend. Carpooling is good for the environment and is a great way to meet other volunteers! It is up to each person to find their own ride to Cold River Camp.
GEAR For trailwork: Sturdy hiking boots Hiking socks Durable pants and shirts you can get dirty Extra layers Work gloves Day pack Water bottles (at least 2 liters) Snacks Rain jacket and rain pants Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
For overnight: Headlamp Sleeping bag or bed linens and blankets Towel Personal toiletries Camp shoes (sandels or sneakers) Games, books, cards, musical instruments
