Description: Join fellow AMC Boston 20s & 30s for a weekend of winter hiking fun based out of the Shapleigh Bunkhouse at Highland Center in Crawford Notch, NH!
** Note : After registering, a leader will be in touch to discuss your recent winter hiking experience. After you talk with a leader and they determine you are a good fit for the trip, you will be confirmed and sent additional trip details. If you are not a good fit for the trip (i.e., do not have winter hiking gear or experience), your registration will be canceled and your payment refunded.**
Hikes : Two hike options will be offered each Saturday and Sunday. The two Saturday hikes will include a longer vigorous/strenuous option and a moderate option. The two Sunday hikes will include a moderate hike and a shorter hike. Specific hikes will be determined based on weather, trail conditions, and the preferences and experience of the group. Shorter hikes will be 3 miles or less with less than 1000 feet elevation gain (e.g., Mt Willard); moderate hikes will be 4-6 miles roundtrip with less than 2500 feet elevation gain (e.g., Mt Tom, Mt Jackson, Mt Pierce); and vigorous/strenuous hikes will be 8-10 miles roundtrip with more than 2500 feet elevation gain (e.g., Mts Pierce-Eisenhower, Mts Tom-Field-Willey).
Gear : Winter gear is required for this trip, including 400g insulated boots, microspikes, and snowshoes. Please refer to the winter day hike gear list here: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf . Most winter gear can be rented free of charge from the Highland Center or borrowed from other AMC members. If you need to borrow gear, let us know and plan to arrive early on Friday evening to check out the gear room.
Lodging : Shapleigh Bunkhouse is a separate building next to the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch, NH. The bunkhouse has 16 bunks across two rooms, with its own bathroom facilities (including showers), common room, and kitchenette. Linens, pillows, and towels are provided.
Meals : Dinner on Friday and Saturday nights and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings are included. Meals are buffet-style in the Highland Center and can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Hiking lunches and snacks are on your own.
Carpooling : We will share a carpool sign-up sheet with approved participants before the trip so folks can offer or ask for rides. Shapleigh Bunkhouse is about 2.5 hours drive from Boston.
Cost : $206 for AMC members or $236 for non-members. Anyone can become an AMC member! Become a member here: https://www.outdoors.org/get-involved/become-a-member/ . Cost covers lodging for Friday and Saturday, dinners on Friday and Saturday, and breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday. Free access to gear room at Highland Center.
Cancellation : Cancellations require the spot to be filled in order to receive reimbursement. On or after February 6, 2026 no refunds can be issued, regardless of reason.
