Description: Description: Join us for a 3 days - 2 nights Memorial day weekend car camping trip in Gorham NH for some hiking and chilling. There will be two days of planned hiking with ample free time for chilling/extra adventures. A list of preselected 4000footer and a 52-with-a-view is planned for each of the two days of planned hiking. After hiking, we will enjoy some down time at the campground for camp fire/BYOG (bring your own games). For logistical reasons, the rooster for each of the hikes will be predetermined before the day of the trip. See details when filling out the sign up questionnaire.
Campground Information: We will be staying at Barnes Field Group Campground. The campground will be large enough that everyone can bring their own tent/hammock for sleeping. The facility provides only drinking water and pit toilets, we may walk down 0.5 mile to Dolly Copp Campground should we need additional amenities (coin op shower) This is a paid campground, participants are expected to pay for their stay upon entering ($12-18/ppl with or without group discount)
Day Hikes available: Day 2: Mt. Cabot (11 miles, 3000 feet of elevation gain ) or Mt Hayes (7 mi, 1800 feet of elevation gain) Day 3: Mt. Waumbek (7 mi, 2700 feet of elevation gain) or Cherry Mt & Owl’s Head (4. 6mi, 1800 feet of elevation gain)
Trails to be taken: Mt. Cabot: (Loop) Bunnell Nottch Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail, Horn Spur, Unknown Pond Trail. Located in the Kilkenny Range. Mt Hayes: (In-Out) Mahoosuc Trail or Centennial Trail. Locate in Gorham. Mt Waumbek: (In-out) Starr King Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail. Locate in Jefferson. Cherry Mt & Owl’s Head: (In-Out) Owl’s Head Trail, Marha’s Mile. Locate in Jefferson Highland.

You are expected to carry your own day pack on each of the hikes, along with you bagged lunch that you bring yourself. With the exception of one dinner, you should supply all the food provisions you will need for the weekend.
Day 1 - Saturday: Arrival. Spontaneous/unofficial activities BYO camp fire dinner (A camp fire will be started and supplied starting an hour before sundown, participants are encouraged to bring a tin-foil dinner to cook on the fire) Day 2 - Sunday: BYO breakfast Hikes: Choice between Mount Cabot and Mount Hayes BYO dinner Day 3 - Memorial Day monday: BYO breakfast Pack up Choice between Mount Waumbek/Starr King or Cherry Mountain & Owl’s Head
Pace expectation: For all four planned hikes, the expected pace would be moderate, between 1 miles/hour uphill and 1.5 miles/hour downhill to achieve an average hiking speed of 1.25 miles/hour.
Minimum experience: For Mt. Hayes and Owl’s Head/Martha: Participants should be comfortable day hiking 1000 feet elevation change in new england rocks, or equivalent fitness level. On a minimum, you must complete a hike of 5 miles with 1000 feet elevation change in the last 6 months and have maintained a relative fitness level to hike continuously for 2.5 hours. For Mt. Cabot and Waumbek: Participants should be comfortable day hiking 2000 feet elevation change in new england rocks, or equivalent fitness level. On a minimum, you must complete a hike of 8 miles with 2000 feet elevation change in the last 6 months and have maintained a relative fitness level to hike continuously for 5 hours.
Gear list: Camping list: Please bring gear for 3 season camping, including: - 3 season tent/hammock with rain fly - sleeping pad & sleeping bag, + any sleeping accessories - hiking layers for 2 days of hiking - Any additional clothes for the activities for the weekend - Mess kit for eating - Meals, snacks, provisions for the weekend - camp light - personal med kit - (Optional): shower kit - (Optional): party game for fun - Any additional gear for camping in the woods
Day hiking pack list: Please bring gear for a 3 season day hike, including: - Non-cotton layers appropriate to the weather Required! - Hiking boots or shoes Required! - Flashlight or headlamp Required! - Rain gear - At least 2 liters of water - Lunch and high energy snacks to get you through the day - Personal first aid kit and medications - Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc) - Insect repellent and/or bug net - Hand sanitizer - Backpack that fits all of the above, plus an extra insulating layer
