Description: Join us for a day hike to Mt. Isolation. While one of the lowest of the 48 four thousand footers at just 4,004’, Isolation’s secluded location midway down the long ridge descending off the southeast shoulder of Mt. Washington gives it a unique view from its open summit. Weather-permitting, participants can expect gorgeous views from the long above tree line section stretching from the eponymous Glen Boulder most of the way down the Montalban Ridge towards Mt. Isolation. The summit of Isolation also affords an excellent view of Oakes Gulf and the southern rim of Mt. Washington.
Expect an approximately 12.1 mile point-to-point hike with approximately 3,900 ft of elevation gain at a moderate pace. Do not let the low elevation of Mt. Isolation fool you! The ascent up Isolation via the Glen Boulder Trail reaches a peak elevation of 5,100’ before dropping over 1,000 feet enroute to Mt. Isolation. In addition, the Glen Boulder Trail is very strenuous, beginning a steep, rocky climb towards Glen Boulder almost immediately after leaving the trailhead. There’s no “warm up” on this trail!
Prospective participants should have completed a hike of similar elevation gain and distance within the last 12 months and have maintained a vigorous cardio workout regimen during the winter months. After registering, one of the leaders will reach out to schedule a short (~15 minutes) phone call to discuss your recent hiking experience, fitness regimen, and gear to make sure the hike is a good match. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you have about the hike.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. We will hold Sunday, July 12 as a backup date for this hike if weather conditions prohibit us from hiking on July 11.
