Description: Trip Description Join us for a marvelous day hike to North Twin (4760’) and South Twin (4902’). Our route will be an out and back hike, ascending North Twin via the North Twin Trail, continuing to South Twin, then retracing our steps back to the trailhead. Expect an approximately 10.9 mile out-and-back hike with approximately 3,650 ft of elevation gain at a moderate - fast pace.
Weather-permitting, participants can expect gorgeous views from the open summit of South Twin, as well as water crossings, rocky terrain, and excellent vistas along the way! Prospective participants should have completed a hike of similar elevation gain and distance within the last 6 months and have maintained a vigorous cardio/HIIT workout regimen during the winter months. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
Hike Plan Our route will be an out-and back hike. Gear List All gear necessary for early summer hiking in New Hampshire. This includes hiking boots or equivalent footwear, multiple layers of non-cotton clothing, at least 2.5-3 liters of water, and enough high-calorie, quick-to-eat food for a full day on the trail. Hiking poles are highly recommended, as there will be one particularly challenging water crossing. Conditions in the White Mountains can change rapidly - bring insulating layers, rain layers, and sun protection as appropriate. The gear list below for 3-season day hikes is a good starting point: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf
Screening Requirements: Fitness Looking for similar elevation gain and distance in the White Mountains or other similar mountain ranges (Maine 4,000 footers, Green Mountains, Adirondacks. Note that the Catskills, Western MA, southern NH, etc. tend to feature less aggressive terrain) AND a high level of physical fitness. Running, distance cycling, HIIT etc. are good activities. Lower-cardio exercises like bodybuilding weightlifting, city walking, yoga, etc. are generally less effective at preparing for hiking. Goal is to complete the hike under 7 hours for a pace of over 1.7mph+
