Description: Join the Narragansett 20s/30s on a beach/trail walk out to view Whale Rock, a treacherous reef at the mouth of the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. In the late 1800s, a lighthouse was built on top of Whale Rock in order to alert mariners to the presence of the reef, which had already claimed several sailor's lives. After the devastating hurricane of 1938, all that remains of the lighthouse is the brick tower lining, which is still viewable today. We will walk roughly a mile through woods and rock slabs to the sandy/rocky beach in front of Camp Varnum to have a packed dinner on the rocks or on the sand. Afterwards, participants are welcome to drive 5 minutes down the road to get some of southern RI's best local ice cream at Baron's in Narragansett.
Participants should bring:

  • Packed dinner (that you can walk a mile with)
  • Blanket to sit on or packable chair (that is comfortable to walk a mile with)
  • Shoes for both roots and rocks as well as beach sand

The weather forecast, parking, and meeting details will be sent to confirmed participants a day in advance.
