AMC Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) Paddle on Narrow River- Indigenous Peoples' Day
Details
Please join us for what will probably be the last paddle of the traditional season on the beautiful Narrow River in Narragansett, part of the Pettaquamscutt (Narrow) River Watershed. This will be a SUP paddle with standup paddleboarders (SUPers).
A separate but parallel excursion for kayakers will also run (see separate listing on AMC website to be led by Linda Pease).
Plan on a review of equipment and basic strokes, and easy going paddling downriver past the Sprague Bridge towards the southern end of Narragansett Beach. Distance to cover- 3 miles round trip. This paddle trip is rated Easy using the AMC difficulty rating system- see https://www.outdoors.org/outdoor-activities/difficulty-ratings.
We will all learn something new and have a good time. Water temperature is currently about 64 degrees, so wear synthetic clothing and bring a fleece and change of clothes in the car. Wind is always a key factor in standup paddleboarding, and we are hoping that it will be minimal given our early afternoon departure. Right now air temperature is forecast for 60 degrees, with wind forecast for just under 10 mph, with gusts higher, so we will be keeping a close watch, as weather has been quite volatile all season. Expect a final confirmation the day before.
We’ll be meeting at the former site of Narrow River Kayaks, 94 Middlebridge Rd, Narragansett, RI 02882, which is now a public launch with parking.
You can bring your own board, paddle, and personal flotation device (PFD) if you wish. Otherwise, please contact Jason Considine, former owner of Narrow River Kayaks, who now operates a mobile rental and delivery service. Jason will drop off and pick up the equipment for $40 per person. Just let him know you are with the AMC Narragansett Chapter group. Same thing goes for the kayaker group led by Leader Linda Pease. Jason can be reached at (401) 316-9755.
Please get there by 12:30PM so that we can get everyone squared away. Do let me know if you plan to rent. You must wear a PFD on this trip- no exceptions. We also strongly recommend water shoes/booties, sunscreen, a hat, and of course, plenty of water.
YOU MUST REGISTER ON THE AMC WEBSITE IN ADVANCE- no exceptions. Start at https://www.outdoors.org/outdoor-activities/paddle. You do not need to become a member. Everyone participating in this activity will need to complete a registration and Waiver/Release Form, including contact and emergency contact information.
Looking forward to a beautiful day on the water!
