Description: Description: French Creek State Park and the adjoining Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site offer nearly 8,000 acres of forests, fields and lakes, including nearly 35 miles of hiking trails. This is an AMC 20s/30s group hike of approximately 6 miles and 500 feet of elevation gain at a relaxed pace. We’ll embrace whatever February has to offer and finish the hike with a satisfying sense of winter accomplishment.

The hike will round Hopewell Lake, briefly visit Hopewell Furnace Historic Site and swing by Scotts Lake before our return to the start. This hike is rated "moderate" because of the chance for snow, ice and mud. It is not a workout hike. We will take time to stop for breaks at the top of hills and as needed to keep the group together. The starting location is at the French Creek State Park playground parking area. This is just 800 feet (southwest) of the Hopewell Lake boat ramp parking area. The GPS coordinates for the playground are: 40.1983077435609,-75.79114511944678 (the park office address 843 Park Road, Elverson, PA, which is near the playground).

There are modern bathrooms at the start. We’ll meet there just before 11:00 AM and leave soon after. Wear sturdy footwear and a piece of blaze orange (we’ll have some extra blaze orange pieces available). Pack water, lunch/snacks, extra layer (if temps have been below freezing pack micro spikes). Cell phone reception is spotty at French Creek. Adverse weather conditions which make it unsafe to drive or hike will cancel. Well behaved dogs may attend this hike if they are leashed and can keep up with the group over the full distance.
