Description: The Schylkill river runs through the base of Phoenixville, PA, a quirky town that was voted Best Small Town in America last year. Our fun, relaxing kayak trip will start a few miles below the town at Fitzwater Station (the "Fitz"), a canal-side restaurant that also houses Port Providence Canoe & Kayak rentals.
For beginner paddlers who would like to experience a ride in a kayak or canoe, this is a great trip since boats will be available for rent. Experienced paddlers can also enjoy a pleasant day on the water meeting old friends and making new friends. You can rent a boat, or bring your own.
The trip will start with a 2-mile canal paddle up to Lock 60. This leg of the trip will give paddlers ample time to get accustomed to the boat and making it go where you want it to go. At Lock 60, we will leave the canal and carry our boats over to the Schuykill River. When we reach the takeout point on the Schuykill, we will carry the boats back up to the canal for a short paddle back to the Fitz. Overall, we will paddle about 5 miles or so, stopping to swim and snack along the way.
We should be off the water about 2:00PM depending on how much we swim and play. You may not want to eat too much because post-paddle, you are all invited to join the group for lunch and drinks at the the Fitz bar and grill. We can hang out on their deck with a view of the canal. (Leader testimony: Fitzwater Station is known for their exceptional smoked brisket) .
This is a nice trip with no shuttle, easy parking and no drive for refreshments. Prices for boat rentala from Port Providence Canoe and Kayak Rentals includes:
- Kayak - $44/day
- Tandem kayak - $55/day
- Tandem canoe - $50/day
- Life jackets (PFD) and paddle included
We will send a suggested checklist for what to bring/gear to your email address. For safety, while on the water your PFD (Personal Flotation Device) must be on and secured. No flip flops or inflatable life jackets will be allowed. Toe protection is important; old sneakers or water shoes are best.
To register and sign the AMC waiver, you must click on the Registration link that appears with this activity posting. You are not registered for the trip until you sign the waiver and provide necessary email and contact information so that we can get in touch with you.
Seriously bad weather will cancel the trip. Check you email 2 hours beforehand if the weather is questionable.
