Description: Cushetunk Mountain Preserve is part of a horseshoe-shaped mountain that was formed by volcanic activity during the Jurassic Period about 200 million years ago. The Lenni Lenape called this area “Cushetunk,” meaning “place of hogs,” due to the settlers’ hogs who at times escaped and roamed the mountains. The natural bowl shape of the valley led to the state’s selection of this site for the creation of Round Valley Reservoir in the 1960s. In 1981, Hunterdon county acquired 380 acres as open space that now makes up the preserve that overlooks the reservoir.

We will be hiking a 5.8 miles loop trail with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain enjoying lovely views of Round Valley reservoir through the trees. This trail has two very steep sections, one hill we will be walking up and likely taking breaks, and the second going down hill.
The trail is dirt and does have roots and rocks in sections.

Please wear sturdy walking or hiking shoes with good grip, and trekking poles are strongly recommended for the trail conditions. If it has recently rained, trials may be muddy. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

Hike may be canceled due to inclement weather. Hike leader will contact you the day of for cancellation.

Parking lot for this preserve is small, and there is a second parking area across a set of train tracks off Old Mountain Road. There are also no facilities in the preserve.

Join us after the hike for lunch or a light bite at the Lebanon Pub.
