Audience: 20’s & 30’s

Description: Join other 20s/30s for a flat, out & back hike with a twist! We'll hike at the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge, a hidden gem right next to the Philadelphia International Airport. This preserved land has been a sanctuary for plants and animals since it opened in 1972. As you hike, you will have many chances to see the rich diversity of fish, wildlife and native plants that the refuge supports.

We will meet in front of the nature center and begin our hike from the parking lot. We'll hike along the eastern side of the wetlands loop, before hopping on the Tinicucm trail to complete the Darby Creek Loop. There are a few smaller branch trails we can explore as well. These will take us around the frog pond, to a wildlife viewing blind, and even to the wetlands boardwalk! The terrain is very flat; this is a good hike for binoculars since there are always plenty of birds around the wetlands!

Following the hike, we can grab a bite to eat at the iconic Penrose Diner, located about 10 minutes away on 2016 Penrose Ave, Philadelphia, Pa 19145.

Please meet in the parking lot at 9:45 a m so we can leave promptly at 10:00am .

The trails may be muddy after a rain, so wear sturdy walking shoes. Layer clothing according to the temperatures, and be prepared with a bottle of water. Poor weather conditions may cancel the hike, so check the trip posting before departing.

Please note: In order to comply with Pennsylvania Youth Protection Laws, all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or a legal guardian. This policy applies for all events offered by the Delaware Valley Chapter as well as any other Chapter events within the state of Pennsylvania.

This is intended to be a 20s/30s affinity trip, but everyone is welcome. If you do not identify with that group, we trust that you have reviewed our allyship criteria, have done your due diligence to educate yourself, and have committed to abide by our Code of Conduct.
