Mohonk Preserve Ridge Hike

RSVP will open on May 2nd at 9 am.

Moderate difficulty (2D8) but parts will be "vigorous" (see below).
Rain will cancel. This is a “drive to” hike--there is no mass transit that will get you here.

Be prepared to pay the daily $15 Mohonk Preserve Fee, if you’re not a member. (If you like fantastic views and haven’t visited before, it’s worth it.)

PLEASE GOOGLE MAP IN ADVANCE to Mohonk Visitors Center, to determine appropriate time of departure so as not to make others wait. We will meet in the lot before 9:30 so we can leave on time..

The hike:

• Begin with a trip up the "Stairmaster"an impressive set of stone steps requiring your being in good aerobic condition.
• Walk along the Undercliff trail (a carriage road) and cross the steel bridge to a very short walk along Trapps Road (another carriage road)
• Turn onto the Millbrook Ridge Trail --a mostly smooth slab of rock which provides quite a climb. You'll be instantly met with dramatic 360 degree views.
• Walk along the ridge to Millbook Mountain, our highest point. We will eat lunch there while seeing a spectacular view that goes on forever.
• We will take the Millbrook Trail to the Coxing Trail and return to Trapps Road
• We will take Trapps Road back to Undercliff where we will likely see some climbers hanging from ropes
• Back down the Stairmaster to the Visitor Center.

The hike is about 7. 5 miles but it is rocky uneven walking for a lot of it (poles would be good to have, if you have them). We will walk at a brisk/moderate pace---more moderate on the steep parts.

Bring 2 liters of water and lunch/snacks.

Please note that Covid-19 has persisted in our region from its onset in 2020. In the interest of public health, please do not join this hike if symptomatic of Covid-19 or infected with it.
